Mark your calendars for September 19, because Business Expo is right around the corner! This year, we are continuing the Tailgate Party theme we introduced last year. Score a touchdown by showcasing your business, products, and services to the community! Booths are now available for this premier networking event. In addition, there will be games, prizes, music, food, and fun! You don't want to miss out on the hottest ticket in town - call us today to reserve your spot.
Happy Birthday to the United States Coast Guard! We love our Coastie families, and we appreciate all they do for our community. Thank you to the businesses who stepped up to provide Coast Guard appreciation events and discounts: Albemarle Lanes, Captain D's, Dairy Queen, Firehouse Subs, Lazzy Frog, Muddy Waters Coffeehouse, Plaza Azteca, RCE Theaters, Sonic, and Zaxby's.
Congratulations to the inaugural class of Albemarle Leadership! Over the past six months, our class of 17 participants visited Harvey Point Defense Testing Activity, Nucor Steel, H2OBX Water Park, Regulator Marine, Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge, College of The Albemarle, Elizabeth City State University, and Mid-Atlantic Christian University. They participated in leadership seminars and activities, and formed a group bond. The Albemarle Leadership program is a collaborative effort between the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Ahoskie, Currituck, Edenton-Chowan, Perquimans, and Windsor-Bertie Chambers of Commerce. Information about next year's program will soon be available, and we look forward to meeting our next group of leaders!
We were honored to cut the ribbon on Coldwell Banker Seaside Realty's new location at 314 S Hughes Blvd on July 16th. Their new location is cozy and inviting - they welcome you to stop by and check them out. On July 25 Herndon Construction invited us to a Business After Hours at one of their beautiful model homes in Stockbridge at Tanglewood. Thank you to these businesses that invited us to celebrate with them.
The 2019-2020 Chamber Guides are here! This handy members-only guide is your resource to who's who in the business community. Please swing by the Chamber office and pick up one up for your location.

The Coastie Corner
Coast Guard Day
First and foremost, I want to thank all of the members of the Chamber who assisted YN1 Mayberry in making this year's Welcome Expo such a huge success. We had an unprecedented 55 booths signed up to represent at this year's event! All of the new and even the legacy Coasties really appreciate the Welcome Expo and learning about the wealth of services available in our area. The Expo could have not been so successful without a lot of hard work from a small cadre of volunteers and we certainly appreciate it. We also hosted a highly successful Educational Fair with sixteen Colleges, Universities, and Tech schools present. A great deal of valuable information was delivered to our members who are eager to further their education. As this newsletter is released, we will be celebrating the Coast Guard's 229th birthday with another HUGE Coast Guard Day celebration. Hopefully, Mother Nature will play nicely this year and we won't continue with the recent 115 degree heat index or the violent thunderstorm activity. As recorded in previous years, we are expecting well over 3000 attendees at this year's event! The entertainment and food vendor list for this year's event includes: The Tidewater Drive Band, a variety of local performers including House of Christ Outreach Ministry Angels of Praise, Clowns- Bubbles and Pickles, Mrs. Amber Jones (singer), ESCU STEM Truck, Evolution Wrestling Team, USO Game Truck, Atkins BBQ, Lil Caesars, SNO to GO, and a fantastic car and truck show! An event of this magnitude could never have been pulled off with such success without an abundance of hard work and dedication from our Morale, Welfare and Recreation staff supplemented with an army of volunteers from the Chamber and the local community. In addition, sponsorships (in no particular order) from Perry Auto, Hall Honda, College of the Albemarle Foundation, Elizabeth City State University, Navy Federal Credit Union, Dominion Energy, Forbes Homes, ABNB Federal Credit Union, USAA, Coastal Beverage Co., RO Givens, City Beverage, Pasquotank County, Camden County, Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Tourism (Visit Elizabeth City), Burger King, Albemarle YMCA, Fairfield Inn, Dairy Queen, Pepsi, Sentara Medical Center, GEICO, Toyota of Elizabeth City, Nissan of Elizabeth City, Elizabeth City Downtown Inc., First Command Financial, and Veteran's United Home Loans provided essential support. I personally thank you all on the behalf of our entire Coast Guard family for your assistance! Our MWR staff is already planning for a bigger and better event for 2020!
Have a great

Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity
|
|
One of the most common misconceptions that people have about Habitat for Humanity is that people receive "free" houses. Since the first partner house was constructed in 1969, homeowners have paid mortgage payments. Founders Millard and Linda Fuller developed the concept of "partnership housing" while living and working on the Koinonia Farm in Americus, Ga. The Fullers used the payments from the no-interest loans to create a "Fund for Humanity."
This is the same principle followed by Habitat affiliates around the world today. Local affiliates pay construction costs upfront and the homeowner payments are used to construct new houses. Applicants must provide proof that they are able to pay a monthly mortgage payment, have a need (which is verified during a home visit) and be willing to partner with us by completing sweat equity on the construction of their new home.
Our new homeowner was asked to explain what this new house will mean to her family. She said, "We have lived in homes that were taken from under us & forced to move out, we have had to move due to protection issues, we have lived in homes with slumlords, as well as in homes with family members that made us feel very unwelcome. I have often prayed that the Lord would provide me with the means to give my kids a home to call OUR home. Words cannot explain or describe the happiness, joy, or the magnitude of our gratitude to all the people that have and will lend a hand in building this home with us. Thank you and I pray that we are able to pay it forward!"
Please join us as we begin construction of this new house on 5
th Street.
