Thank you to all who supported our 109 th Annual Dinner on January 30. Whether you purchased a ticket, donated or bid on an auction item, or volunteered your time; you helped make our event a great success!

During cocktail hour, attendees socialized with one another and competed to be the winning bidders of amazing auction items. Our 350+ guests enjoyed a delicious meal from Montero's Restaurant, Bar, and Catering, while keynote speaker Brad Hurdle discussed how to harness generational diversity to your business advantage.

We gave much deserved recognition to the winners of our annual awards, and to retiring board members.

Congratulations to our winners:
Business of the Year: B&M Contractors
Nonprofit of the Year: Chief Petty Officers Association
Ambassador of the Year: Melanie Metzler, B&M Contractors

Thanks once again for a great evening!

January Was A Blur

I am absolutely amazed that I am already writing my entry for February 2020! It is as if January lasted about a minute. Fortunately, this year we have not had to deal with any snowy weather (yet) or government shutdowns. However, flu season has certainly made its presence known throughout the community. This month I had the privilege of meeting the new President for Sentara this month and I look forward to continuing the outstanding partnership that our organizations have shared over the years. Potato Festival planning is under way and the Coast Guard commands look forward to participating again this year. Transfer orders are starting to flow for our active duty members, so several members are excited to see what's next while others deal with anxiety over yet another move. Personally, I will be relocating up to the Directorate of Logistics in Norfolk, VA. The timing for my Change of Command and the name of my replacement remains in the TBD column for the moment. Hopefully, Spring will be here before we know it and we will not have to deal with any of that white powdery/slushy stuff. I hope you all have a fabulous February and Happy Valentines Day in advance!

The House suspended the rules and passed H.J. Res.80, sponsored by House Veterans Affairs Committee Ranking Member Rep. Phil Roe (Tenn.), to approve a request from the Department of Veterans Affairs to pursue a pilot program that increases veteran access to dental care. Currently, only eight percent of veterans have dental coverage from the VA for service-connected dental problems. The measure now goes to the Senate for further consideration. Oral health is an important component of overall health.

Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity

The footers have been poured for our new house on 5 th Street! We are hoping to begin construction in the next few weeks. We need many people to complete this project for our new partner family:
  • Volunteers to work on the construction. We will train you if you haven't had construction experience.
  • Organizations and businesses to provide lunches for our volunteers. We generally expect 10-15 people on the worksite each day. Lunches can be very simple-sandwich, chips, drink, cookie.
  • People to make phone calls to churches to solicit lunch donations and recruit volunteers. This is a perfect opportunity for someone who cannot come out to work on the site but wants to help.
Finally, this project has had numerous delays and cost overruns. We need donations of materials and cash to help meet these needs. Specific needs are windows, doors, and siding.
If you are able to help in any way, please contact us at echabitat@yahoo.com or call Jane Elfring, 252-384-0115.

You are invited to join us in providing scholarships for current and aspiring ECSU students through your sponsorship in our annual Founders Day Scholarship Gala, now in its 13th year.

During this event we will not only celebrate the founding of this great university, but also, we will recognize individuals and corporate and community partners who are legacy contributors to the university's sustainability.
