Coast Guard Run, Here We Come!
In January, the Coast Guard was excited to commission the USCGC CHARLES MOULTHROPE (WPC-1141), and it became the newest Fast Response Cutter (FRC) in the Coast Guard’s fleet. The Charles Moulthrope was a member of the Revenue Cutter Service (a predecessor of the Coast Guard) and while en route to Alaska, he rescued multiple shipmates who had been thrown into the sea. Moulthrope was said to have “grabbed a line and leaped over the side” into the freezing water to save four men. Later he actually lost his life in the performance of his duties in Unalaska, Alaska when he fell from a mast while trying to fix part of the ship’s rigging. WPC-1141 is the first FRC to be named for a Revenue Cutter member and brings recognition to the service and sacrifice of hundreds of sailors who served their country aboard the ships of this precursor of the Coast Guard. The new cutter is the first of six new FRCs that will actually be stationed in Bahrain as part of Patrol Forces Southwest Asia (PATFORSWA) working with Naval Forces Central Command to conduct maritime operations to forward U.S. interests, deter and counter disruptive countries, defeat violent extremism and strengthen partner nations’ maritime capabilities to secure the maritime environment. Coast Guard Base Elizabeth City supports all payroll and many other administrative processes for PATFORSWA – so MOULTHROPE is also a new customer for us!
Elizabeth City Coast Guard members as well as the greater Coast Guard are also excited to support the upcoming Coast Guard Half-Marathon and 5K in March 2021! As you are likely aware, this event is the Coast Guard’s first official road race (the only military service previously without one.) The Coast Guard has sponsored and endorsed this event and worked extensively with Visit Elizabeth City to put together press and public affairs videos to help spread the word about this fantastic event. Yes – I am registered and will be looking forward to running this event, if virtually! If you are interested, more details of this event can be found at CoastGuardRun.com or by contacting the Visit Elizabeth City staff.
Finally, I guess I may need to be careful what I wish for – but I’m happy for one that my wish for snow last month came true! I hope you had time to enjoy it!

Vaccine Development:
· Typically, the process for developing a new vaccine can take several years, sometimes 10-15 years.
· In contrast, COVID-19 vaccines have been developed in the space of one year.
· This does not mean the development of the COVID-19 vaccine skipped any necessary steps.
· Vaccine development typically follows a series of steps: research and discovery, pre-clinical testing and testing in humans (clinical trials), vaccine manufacture, and then seeking approval through the U.S Food and Drug Administration.
· In the case of the COVID-19 vaccine, many of these developmental steps occurred concurrently rather than consecutively. This process can be allowed under what’s known as “special considerations” in situations like a public health emergency arising from a pandemic.
· Development of the COVID-19 vaccine has been spurred by Operation Warp Speed, a White House initiative established with a goal of producing 300 million doses of safe, effective COVID-19 vaccines, with initial doses in circulation by January 2021.
· Operation Warp Speed is a partnership between agencies within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) – including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) – and the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).
Vaccine Types:
• According to the World Health Organization, more than 50 COVID-19 vaccine candidates are in various states of clinical trials.
• The vaccine from pharmaceutical company Pfizer is the first to receive emergency use authorization from the FDA. Based on phase three clinical trials results, the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine has been found to be more than 90 percent effective in preventing the virus in study participants. (Pfizer did not accept federal funds in the development of the vaccine, but the government has purchased doses from Pfizer for distribution; the vaccine is shipped directly from Pfizer facilities.) o The Pfizer vaccine needs to be stored at temperatures ranging from -60˚ and -80˚ Celsius (ultra-cold freezer or in the thermal shipping container in which doses are sent).
· When unfrozen, it can be stored at 2-8˚ Celsius for five days, and kept at room temperature for six hours.
· The Pfizer vaccine is an mRNA (messenger RNA) therapeutic that effectively sends a genetic message to the body to trigger an immune response.
· It needs to be administered in two doses 21 days apart (the acceptable range is 19-23 days).
· Pharmaceutical maker Moderna Inc. has also submitted for EUA from the FDA. Clinical trials indicate its COVID-19 vaccine has been found to be nearly 95 percent effective, based on a review of data. o The Moderna vaccine must be stored at -20˚ Celsius.
· When unfrozen, it can be stored at 2-8˚ Celsius for 30 days, and kept at room temperature for 12 hours.
· The Moderna vaccine is an mRNA (messenger RNA) that effectively sends a genetic message to the body to trigger an immune response.
· It needs to be administered in two doses 28 days apart.
· Other companies with vaccine candidates at various stages of development include Astra Zeneca, NovaVax, Merck, Johnson & Johnson, and Sanofi Pasteur/GSK.
How Vaccines Work:
· mRNA, or messenger RNA, vaccines effectively sends a genetic message to the body to trigger an immune response. They contain material from the virus that causes COVID-19 and give cells instructions to initiate a process in the body to fight the virus if infection occurs in the future.
· Viral vector-based vaccines differ from most conventional vaccines in that they don’t actually contain antigens, but rather use the body’s cells to produce them by using a modified virus (the vector) to deliver genetic code for antigen, in the case of COVID-19 spike proteins found on the surface of the virus, into human cells.
· Protein subunit vaccines include harmless proteins (pieces) of the virus that cause COVID-19 instead of the germ. A vaccination leads the body to recognize foreign elements that don’t belong in the body. The body subsequently “remembers” how to fight a future infection.

Elizabeth City Habitat For Humanity
|
|
Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity builds simple, decent, affordable housing for qualified buyers. These homes are built to be energy efficient and low maintenance since our homeowners have limited resources.
Our building requirements will increase over the next few years to meet new Habitat for Humanity International construction standards. These new standards include adding accessibility features like wider hallways and handicapped accessible bathrooms with grab bars. We are adding these features because our homeowners may need these features as they age. The cost to add these items is negligible if done during the design and construction phase rather than retrofitting later on.
We will also be phasing in Energy Star and Indoor airPlus certification requirements. These ratings assure that our houses are extremely energy efficient and have proper indoor ventilation systems. In order to meet these requirements, we need HVAC companies to have employees who are trained in Energy Star systems and individuals who are certified to perform these ratings. At the present time, there are no people in Northeast North Carolina with these certifications and we are working with various organizations to make the training available for those interested in earning these certifications.
As we work to implement these new requirements, we need builders and contractors to give us input. If you are interested in helping us prepare for these changes, please contact Jane Elfring, 252-384-0115.

February Is National Pet Dental Health Month: Clean Those Teeth!
|
|

Dental disease is more than just a cosmetic issue. When your canine companion or feline friend has red gums, yellow teeth, and stinky breath, it could be a sign of serious oral disease that could, if left untreated, lead to devastating affects on your pet’s quality of life.
Neglecting your pet’s teeth and gums can cause chronic pain issues that may even be at the center of certain behavioral problems.
That’s why National Pet Dental Health Month, observed all through February, is so important! Call us today to make an appointment and get started on your pet’s dental care.
