Welcome 2022! We have a special event planned for every week in January! What an amazing start to the New Year!
Did you attend the Christmas Parade? It was wonderful to see so many of our members participating in the parade. Our community lined the streets, and it was such a proud moment to be in Elizabeth City. Community is everything.
This year our focus revolves around community. In fact, our focus is “Community>Connect>Collaborate>Cultivate." Our mission is to have a strong Chamber Community that connects our businesses to each other. Through that connection comes collaboration. Collaboration is how we can help each other succeed. Finally, we want to cultivate and deepen those relationships - with your Chamber, other businesses, and most of all, our community. Shopping local is one of the most important and impactful way for our local economy to thrive.
For those of you who know me, you know my mindset is “I want it all!” My #1 goal for 2022 is simple; I want every business in our area to be a member of the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce! We want to be your partner, advocate for you, understand your concerns, help you thrive, and celebrate your successes together! So reach out to us! We are here for the sole purpose of serving you, our Chamber community.
See you at the events! We will be talking to you!
Serving You,
Anya Davis

BM1 Tyler Ford, a great example of the spirit of the Holidays. Each year, Tyler Ford (a Boatswain’s Mate First Class currently stationed down at CG Station Oak Island), sets up a festive display of around 50,000 lights, and collects food and donations for local food drives. Since 2014, he has helped distributed over 25,000 pounds of food to the communities where he has been stationed. BM1 Ford is just one example of our Coasties doing great things in their communities – and we’re certainly proud of them all.
More locally, in early December, Coast Guard members from E-City conducted a rescue off of the fishing vessel BALD EAGLE II after the vessel became disabled and was drifting towards the shore. The vessel’s crew called Coast Guard Sector North Carolina, who then launched a helicopter crew from E-City and a boat crew from an Outer Banks station to rescue the crew off the stranded vessel. Water temperatures were a chilly 56 degrees, which would have been very dangerous for the four crew members had they not been prepared, but all four were wearing survival suits to prevent hypothermia when the rescue helicopter arrived. The four crew members were safely transported to Elizabeth City, and no injuries were reported. The vessel, while being carefully monitored by the Coast Guard, was later successfully salvaged from the beach. As the forecasted weather this time of year greatly varies, this case reminds us all that it’s really important to dress for the water temperatures not for the air temperatures!
In closing, Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you all. I will be spending some time with my family locally – but I wish you all a safe and Happy New Years!
-CDR Brook Sherman, Commanding Officer, Base Elizabeth City

Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity

This has been a busy year for Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity. We closed on three houses on 5th St., the latest one dedicated on Dec. 6 for the Crifaci family.
At the time of Ms. Crifaci’s application, she and her children had been living in a trailer. During the home visit, Habitat members found evidence of mold throughout and told the board that it “was the worst house” they had ever visited.
Renovation work on the house on 5th St. began in early 2020 but was halted due to pandemic restrictions until May 2020. The family performed sweat equity to clean and paint the house. Once the work was complete, Ms. Shannon Crifaci and her children Nyah and Anthony moved in and rented the house because the organization wanted to get them out of the unhealthy conditions they were living in.
They completed their sweat equity hours during that time and completed the requirements for closing stipulated by the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency. These included homeowner education classes that were conducted via Zoom due to the pandemic.
During the ceremony, Habitat board member Fran Sutton presented a Bible to the family and Pastor TJ Long Jr of First Christian Church blessed the house.
“This house gives them a clean and safe place to live,” said Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity Board President Erica Ramjohn. “We are very pleased that we were able to work with this family to bring this project to fruition.”
In our store, we had a collection of nonperishable food items for the Food Bank of the Albemarle and collected 55 pounds of food. This collection was part of our ongoing efforts to partner with other nonprofit agencies in our area.

Collagen is the most abundant, naturally occurring protein found in the human body and is the building block for your cells, tissues, and organs, making it essential for healthy bones, joints, skin, hair, and nails.
As we age, our natural collagen production begins to slow down (it begins in your 20s), which can lead to common signs of aging such as stiff joints, sagging skin, brittle nails, lackluster hair and wrinkles.
Shaklee's Collagen-9 product will be available on August 2nd.
Some details about the product:
- 10g Collagen per serving.
- Uniquely designed to include all 9 essential amino acids needed to support protein synthesis, including collagen.
- 100% DV of Biotin to support healthy hair, skin, and nails.*
- 100% DV of Vitamin C to protect our bodies against damage caused by free radicals and helps in collagen synthesis.*
- 100% Hydrolyzed Collagen for quicker digestion and absorption.*
What can you say about Collagen-9:
- Unflavored and easy to mix in your favorite drink.
- Non-GMO, grass-fed, pastured raised and gluten-free.
- No artificial flavors, sweeteners, or preservatives added.
