Elizabeth City Area Chamber E-News
Vol. 37, No. 7                                            July 1, 2019

We had a record crowd at our 9 th Annual Women of Excellence Awards Luncheon on June 19! Twenty very deserving nominees were honored, while five winners were named. Our winners are: Amber Davis , principal of Camden County High School and Camden Early College High School; Norma James , Broker-In -Charge at Taylor Mueller Realty; Rhonda James-Davis , Career and Technical Education Director and Interim Superintendent at Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools; Rachel Reddick , church and community volunteer; and Dena Richardson , Interim Fire Marshal for the City of Elizabeth City. These women were honored for going above and beyond in their careers and in their service to the community.

A big thank you to event sponsor Piedmont Natural Gas, and to our hosts at The Carolina Center at Corporate Drive for providing a wonderful setting. Albemarle Floral supplied roses for the nominees, Margaret Twiford provided beautiful table centerpieces, and Shaklee-Gwen Bell provided goody bags.

Thanks so much to the Women of Excellence Committee, nominators, honorees, and attendees!

Also in June, we had a great time sampling the delicious offerings from The Mills Downtown Bistro at a Business After Hours on June 17, and we helped the City of Elizabeth City celebrate their expanded drive through on June 18.

We'd love to see you at one of our July events! On July 16, we will host a ribbon cutting at Coldwell Banker Seaside Realty, and on July 25, Hearndon Construction has invited us to tour a model home at Stockbridge at Tanglewood. See you there!

Serving you,
Holly Staples

Summer Time

I hope this month's newsletter finds everyone doing well and enjoying the beginning of the Summer season. If you did not get to see it on television, a C-130J from the Air Station participated in the flyover at Normandy France for the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Little old Elizabeth City was represented half way around the world! The active duty work force at all seven Coast Guard units is drawing to a minimum while we make our annual transition through transfer season. Here at Base, we said farewell to an icon and unmatched community partner as CDR Warren Judge transferred all of the way up to Portsmouth, VA. On June 28th, we also bid farewell to CAPT Lance Belben as he and his family sailed off into retirement in the Raleigh NC area. We welcomed CAPT Brian Hopkins and his family as he assumed command at the Aviation Technical Training Center. If you have the opportunity to meet him, please welcome them to our community. We are really looking forward to our annual Welcome Expo on July 24th! That event is an excellent opportunity for local businesses and provides an eye opening experience for our Coasties who have just transferred in and some legacy Coasties as well.   It is scheduled from 10-2 PM at the Hangar 7 Ballroom on BASE Elizabeth City. You can contact the Chamber for further information. In addition to the Welcome Expo, we will be hosting this year's Coast Guard Day Picnic on August 1st from 12-4 PM. This event continues to draw an average of 3200 participants annually. We are all looking forward to it. I hope you all have a fantastic and safe holiday next week for the Fourth of July and I hope to see you at all of the various Summer events.

CDR Randy Meador
Ambassador of the Month
Congratulations to Rachelle Gunter, Coordinator of Customized and Small Business Center Training, our Ambassador of the Month!

Working at College of The Albemarle and being a Chamber Ambassador has given her a chance to connect with the community. She enjoys coordinating and informing others of  the many resources and training opportunities that COA has to offer through the Small Business Center and Customized Training Program. If you are a local industry looking to expand/improve your workforce or a small business owner, she is happy to help with any training needs.

Volunteers Needed for Coast Guard Day

Please consider sharing some of your time serving food to our local military members and their families. This year's Coast Guard Day picnic will be held on
August 1, 2019 from 12:00 to 4:00 PM on the Coast Guard Base.

We welcome volunteers for Coast Guard Day picnic, which is being celebrated on August 1, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. We are in need of a number of volunteers to setup 8:30 to 11:00 AM, help with the event 12:00 - 4:00 PM transferring soda, water, and ice, manage ride lines, dump trash, give directions, and other things, and assist in cleaning up from 3:30 to 5:30 PM. If you are interested in serving as a volunteer, please check out the specific positions and time slots, then sign up. It's that simple. Thank you for your time and consideration. If you do not have a valid ID to access USCG Base, please email Ecity-mwr@uscg.mil and request a visitor request so we can make arrangements to get you on base.

Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity

Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity is pleased to announce our new partner family. Shannon is a very busy mother of two who works two jobs. Her children attend Pasquotank County High School and Elizabeth City Middle School.
In addition to volunteers to work on the build site, we are looking for people to sponsor items for the house. Any amount is helpful but here are some suggestions. You can choose to sponsor a particular item such as the plumbing for $3500, a particular room for amounts ranging from $1000-3000, or windows for $3000. All donors will be featured prominently in our publicity, on a sign by the construction site and in the dedication program.
Another sponsorship opportunity is a one-day business sponsorship of $250 for up to 5 volunteers. Volunteers can wear company shirts and will receive a Habitat t-shirt, lunch, drinks and snack and the company will receive print and social media publicity. Servpro of Elizabeth City/Outer Banks

SERVPRO® of Elizabeth City/Outer Banks Encourages Coastal Carolina Residents to be Storm Ready
A Few Steps to Prepare and Protect Your Family

As we are at the beginning of hurricane season on the Atlantic coast, SERVPRO® of Elizabeth City/Outer Banks encourages everyone to remember the importance of disaster preparedness. The key to disaster preparedness is having an emergency plan in place before the disaster hits. Acting with a few simple steps can make the difference in protecting and keeping your family safe and protecting your property from weather related damage.
Build a basic emergency supply kit stocked with enough water and food for a minimum of three days for you and for each of your family members, pets included. Be mindful to include any necessary medications. Recommended emergency supply kit items include:
  • Water (one gallon/per person/per day)
  • Three-day supply of non-perishable foods
  • Manual can opener
  • Battery or solar powered radio, preferably a NOAA weather radio
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Whistle (to signal for help)
  • Dust masks or bandanas
  • Local map
  • Important documents, such as insurance policies, bank account information, passwords, and identifications
  • Matches (in a waterproof container) and/or lighter
Make a Family Emergency Plan.
A Disaster may not strike when you and your family are together at home. Plan now for a meeting place and how you will contact each other. Visit ready.gov to access a Family Emergency Plan template to help with your planning.
Stay Informed.
Know your flood zone for your property and your neighborhood and know the evacuation route should evacuation become necessary. Listen to your local news and authorities for direction.
Prepare your property.
You may need to prepare your home for the impact of a storm or hurricane. Covering all your windows in your home will help to protect it. Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows; however, the second-best option is to board up the windows with plywood. Tape will not prevent your windows from breaking. Trim your trees and bushes that are around your home and clear any debris from rain spouts and gutters. Secure outdoor furniture, trash receptacles, decorations and anything else not secured that could become projectile.
Establish a SERVPRO® Emergency READY Profile for Your Business. SERVPRO® developed the SERVPRO® Emergency READY Program to help business owners create an Emergency READY Profile® (ERP) for their facility, at no charge. The business owner works with SERVPRO® of Elizabeth City/Outer Banks
to gather and document information that will become critical if a disaster strike. Once the ERP is created, business owners have access to their own information 24/7 online and by using SERVPRO's free smartphone app. Contact us at 252-331-7889 to get set up.
