Dear Chamber Members,
It’s so hard to believe that half of 2020 is already gone! While this is certainly not the year any of us imagined, you have risen to the challenge. You have adapted and persevered through unexpected circumstances, adjusted your business models and formed new partnerships, and creatively and gracefully transitioned to a new and unforeseen reality. Through it all, we remain hopeful that the second half of the year will bring a rally and recovery.
Beginning in July, we will profile some of our members with our new “Member Moment” spotlight, featured on Facebook. These spotlights will showcase your business and give you an opportunity to share your story with the community. If you are interested in participating, please contact Events and Marketing Manager Darlene Tighe at
darlene@elizabethcitychamber.org.
You won’t want to miss our 12
th Annual Golf Classic on Friday, September 11 at YMCA at The Pines! Plans are underway to make this the best one yet. We hope you will plan to spend the day with us, golfing, networking, and having fun. Click here to reserve your team or secure a sponsorship. We are also looking for committee members to help plan this event. If you’d like to serve on this dynamic committee, please let us know!
We miss you, we are thinking of you, and we can’t wait to safely gather with you again. Supporting and promoting you is our priority. Please reach out to us with your needs, and I promise we will work with you to find solutions.
Serving you,
Holly Staples

The Coastie Corner
Light at the End of the Tunnel
Well, June has come and gone and we are still adjusting our lifestyles to the COVID environment! At least we can now partake of dining out within a modified means. The first time that my wife and I got to eat out, it felt so great to do something normal again. As I stated last month, June was chocked full of changes within Coast Guard commands.
Commanding Officers have been replaced at the National Strike Force Coordination Center, the Aviation Logistics Center, the Air Station and the C-27J Asset Project Office. The small boat station is next and then I will be relieved by CDR Brook Sherman on July 31
st
. For the most part, all of these events were extremely small and aired virtually for unit personnel, family and friends to still participate albeit virtually.
It is with great regret that we had to cancel our Coast Guard Day event this year due to COVID event restraints. We are going to try and hold some type of similar event in the Fall, if populous events are allowed at that point. Hopefully, I will see each and every one of you here in my last month at Elizabeth City. I hope you all stay well and we all meet in person again soon.

The 2020 Challenge
Under normal circumstances, Albemarle Hopeline fundraises
every single day
at Hopeline’s Clothesline Thrift Store. Due to COVID-19, not only did the store close for several months, but all fundraisers including our signature “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event were cancelled. It is difficult to predict what the upcoming year might look like as we anticipate state and federal budget cuts that could critically impact our organization.
The 2020 Challenge is our
single
“ask” this year. Revenues from this campaign will fund:
- Emergency shelter for victims who are not safe in their homes.
- Supportive services to help victims become survivors including counseling, advocacy, court accompaniment, and the “Power to Improve” program which helps clients reach their financial, employment, and educational goals to sustain violence-free futures.
- Critical PPE and cleaning supplies for our shelter, clients, and staff
- Hopeline’s Annual Christmas Project and Back to School Campaigns*
- Operating reserves to protect against future lost revenues due to COVID-19
*
You may indicate on your contribution if you would like your gift to be restricted to one of these projects.
Your gift will go farther this year:
Our goal is to raise $25,000 in
new*
or
increased*
gifts between June 1
st
and November 1
st
, 2020. If we meet this goal,
all $25,000 will be matched by the Anonymous Trust.
*New donations are from any donor that has not given to Hopeline in the past 18 months. Increased gifts include any amount over last year’s contribution.
Ways to give:
Mail a check to:
P.O. Box 2064
Elizabeth City, NC 27906
Please consider becoming a monthly supporter. A gift of $5, $10, or $20 per month adds up over time!

The Ranking Member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, and the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity, along with the Chairman of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, the Ranking Member of SVAC, introduced the “Veterans Economic Recovery Act” (H.R.7111/ S.3899) that directs the Department of Veterans Affair (VA) to provide a retraining assistance program for unemployed veterans.
The centerpiece of this legislation would be the creation of a rapid retraining program to provide unemployed veterans and reservists with 12 months of educational benefits, to pursue training in high-demand occupations.

Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity
|
|
Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity’s store re-opened and is doing a great business. In addition, we are preparing to start our new home construction. We appreciate all of our customers because profits from the store help us pay for new construction and rehabs of houses for qualified buyers in Pasquotank County. We changed our hours and procedures to adjust to Covid-19.
Our new hours are 10:30-6 on Tuesday and Thursday. We made these changes in response to customer requests for morning hours and later hours to accommodate work hours.
Other changes you will notice: all staff and customers are required to wear masks while in the store; a sanitizing station is located right inside and customers are asked to use this before shopping; only 20 customers are allowed in the store at a time; and cleaning of counters, door handles, carts and other surfaces is done regularly.
At the present time, we are not picking up donations or accepting upholstered items. When we resume pickups, they will be for items on porches or in garages only.
Final preparations are underway for construction of our new house at 913 5
th
Street. When materials arrive, we will need many hands to offload. If you or your business can help, please contact Jane Elfring, 252-384-0115.
Covid-19 has severely impacted our finances, as it has for most businesses and nonprofits in the area. Our homeowners are struggling to make their mortgage payments, which help pay for construction and rehab projects. Loss of store revenues for two months has negatively impacted our bottom line as well. Habitat for Humanity has begun a national fundraising campaign, “Homes, Communities, Hope+You,” to help affilaites meet their urgent financial needs. To contribute, contact Norma James at Taylor Mueller Realty, 252-331-2233.

WALK
for
HUNGER
Sunday, October 11, 2020
We invite you to participate in Food Bank of the Albemarle’s Walk for Hunger. Your team can start
fun
draising today for the Food Bank, and
every $1 is equal to approximately 4 meals!
The more your team raises, the more meals we can provide to men, women, children, seniors, veterans, and active duty military that are in need of food
assistance. Don’t have a team? Come on out! You can still enjoy all the activities and a fun-filled day.
- FUNDRAISING: Every $1 you raise for the Food Bank is equal to about 4 meals! It’s really simple- the more money raised, the more meals we can provide to people in need in our communities.
- WALK for HUNGER! Join us for a “pick your distance walk” (.15th of a mile to any distance you choose!) in the South Park Sports Complex and our 20,000 sq. ft. facility.
This will be an afternoon of
fun
draising for the whole family!
