Elizabeth City Habitat For Humanity
Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity builds affordable housing for qualified homebuyers. There are many positive impacts of affordable housing on families, according to a 2020 study commissioned by Habitat for Humanity International.
One benefit of homeownership that the study looked at was educational outcomes. Many of our families move from substandard housing which can cause poor health outcomes. Local applicants frequently identify their need for a new home connected to health concerns such as asthma, mold, and rodents. According to studies quoted in the HFHI study, 49% of school-age children missed at least one school day due to asthma. It is important to note that the needs listed on the application are verified during home visits.
All Habitat affiliates build decent affordable housing designed to not only be energy efficient but also provide a healthier environment for families. Most affiliates exceed building codes because low-income families need safe, healthy and efficient housing. The house that we are currently completing has six inch walls which provide higher insulation, energy efficient windows donated by Mr. Roger’s Windows, a mini-split HVAC system donated by B&M Contractors, roofing donated by HomeFix Remodeling, siding from ABC Supply and electrical work donated by H&H Electric.

Northeast Academy for Aerostat & Advanced Technologies
The Northeast Academy for Aerospace and Advanced Technologies (NEAAAT) was awarded a $14,906 grant through the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Coding and Mobile App Grant. The grant has provided professional development for NEAAAT instructors in computer science applications and implementation in Project-Based Learning experiences. The grant also engages the 104 8th-grade NEAAAT students in a computer science activity of designing, engineering, and coding their own Micro:bit watch.
The Micro:bit is a tiny handheld programmable computer. The Micro:bit has small led lights which can flash messages, motion sensors, and they can be hooked up to other devices through cables and Bluetooth technology. 8th-grade NEAAAT students used the Micro:bit to make a watch capable of recording steps like a pedometer, record body temperature, and monitor air equality in their immediate environment. Research has proven that each of these health indicators (exercise, body temperature, and air quality) have a direct correlation to maintaining health during the COVID-19 pandemic. The students coded the Micro:bit and sensors using Python programming through a partnership with Jeffries Epps, CEO of STEMERALD City, LLC.
After achieving their first milestone of 50,000 steps, each 8th-grade student will receive a "Griffin Card". The NEAAAT mascot is the griffin. This idea was born from NEAAAT's FIRST LEGO League Team #51733, the Robo-Griffins, Innovation Project, "Walk-a-Bit Downtown". The middle grades team wanted to get more students moving because they have researched and seen the negative effects of restricted mobility due to COVID-19 restrictions, such as weight gain and effects on mood. The Griffin Card will have discounts from downtown businesses, such as 10% off of a purchase and a free drink. It is the hope that students and their families will get out, exercise, and visit Elizabeth City's downtown shops. The FLL team worked with Debbie Malenfant of Elizabeth City Downtown, Inc. to develop the project. This Project-Based Learning experience has connected our students to (1) computer science literacy through coding, (2) partnerships to promote shopping with local businesses, (3) increase connectivity with our community, by walking downtown, and (4) awareness of COVID-19 health indicators.
Businesses partnering with NEAAAT for the "Walk-a-Bit Downtown" project-based learning experience include:
