February is already a short month but leap year provided us with an additional day to enjoy it. For the second year in a row it was monsoon season here in the Harbor of Hospitality. Oh, and Winter finally showed her fury with the forecasted snowmaggedon at the end of the month. Weather aside, I do consider us blessed that we are not once again dealing with another government lapse in appropriation. All seven local commands joined together this year for a watch party to view the Commandant’s State of the Coast Guard Address. Well over 600 Coast Guards members, civilians, dependents, retirees and several members of the Elizabeth City community attended the event on February 20th at ECSU’s K.E. White center. VADM Michael McAllister, Deputy Commandant for Mission Support along with RADM Keith Smith, Commander Fifth District hosted the event and participated in an extensive Q&A following the Commandant’s speech. In celebration of Black History Month, BASE Elizabeth City’s Special Emphasis Program hosted a highly successful event with Master Chief (ret) Tyrone Anderson Jr, Master Chief (ret) Lisa Spotwood, BM1 (ret) Clarence Neely and SK2/GS14 (ret) James Wimbish as guest speakers. Master Chief (ret) Spotwood became the first African-American female Master Chief Food Service Specialist when she was advanced to E-9 in August of 2004. As we head into March, we will all hope to see some better (warmer) weather as we prepare for another big transfer season.

Hopeline's Clothesline Thrift Store is moving! By March 1st, you can find us at 1755 Weeksville Rd. (formerly the Family Dollar across from ECSU next to Kathy's Kreations). To prepare for the transition, we can no longer accept donations at our "old" location, but we are calling on the community to help us to "Stock the Store" at our new location beginning February 15th. Volunteers are also needed to help with the move and to set up in our new location. Please call Clothesline at 338-3107 for more information. All proceeds from Hopeline's Clothesline Thrift Store support services for victims of domestic and sexual violence at Albemarle Hopeline, Inc.

This year will be especially significant when it comes to honoring and remembering our comrades. Countless commemorations will document the end of World War II, which of course occurred 75 years ago this year.
While many of the heroes of that war have passed on, there are still some who walk with us, from those who endured the attack on Pearl Harbor to those who braved the cold at the Battle of the Bulge to those who exacted revenge on Japan, we will pay tribute to their sacrifice and others who secured victory for America and its allies.
