Elizabeth City Area Chamber E-News
What a fast and furious February we had! We had a great time networking at events hosted by Easter Seals UCP, Chesapeake Regional Primary Care, Sentara Therapy Center, and Chick-Fil-A. March promises to be just as busy. You won’t want to miss any of these great events:

  • We are excited to announce that we are partnering with Atlantic Union Bank to bring you the Albemarle Area Economic Forecast Breakfast on March 4. Dr. James Kleckley of East Carolina University will present his findings on our regional economic forecast. Tickets are selling fast, so contact us today to reserve yours!
  • On Friday, March 6, we will host dual downtown Ribbon Cuttings to kickoff First Friday! At 4pm, we will cut the ribbon at the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Senior Center, and then at 5pm, we will be at the Whitney Young Law Firm Grand Opening and Block Party. It’s sure to be a memorable evening.
  • St. Patrick’s Day Bowling returns on March 11 at Albemarle Lanes! Limited teams are available! Participants are encouraged to dress festively for the occasion, and spectators are welcomed to cheer on their favorite teams in what is sure to be a lively evening of friendly competition.
  • Come celebrate with RCE Theaters on Thursday, March 19 at a Ribbon Cutting and Open House. They are excited to show off their four remodeled auditoriums, featuring new screens, updated seating, and more. Giveaways will include free movie tickets, t-shirts, refillable movie buckets, and more! Refreshments will be served. RCE Theaters will also be giving away $2 movie vouchers for the day of the event!

In a continuous expansion of our marketing efforts, the Chamber works with Livability Media to promote the Elizabeth City area online, in print, and via social media. This effort includes the print and digital versions of Livability Elizabeth City, North Carolina magazine. A Livability Media representative will contact you soon to discuss how your business can participate in this program and gain year-round exposure to a vital target audience.
The Chamber’s Education Committee will host our annual Job Shadow Day Event for local 8 th graders on March 25. If your business is interested in hosting a tour for this event, please contact us. Education Sponsors Sylvan Learning Center and Elizabeth City State University, and Event Sponsors McDonald’s and Pepsi Bottling Ventures, LLC, make this event possible.

The Chamber’s Legislative Committee is seeking new members for 2020. If you are interested in joining this committee, which will host a Candidate Forum later this year, please contact me for details!

Coastie Corner
February is already a short month but leap year provided us with an additional day to enjoy it. For the second year in a row it was monsoon season here in the Harbor of Hospitality. Oh, and Winter finally showed her fury with the forecasted snowmaggedon at the end of the month. Weather aside, I do consider us blessed that we are not once again dealing with another government lapse in appropriation. All seven local commands joined together this year for a watch party to view the Commandant’s State of the Coast Guard Address. Well over 600 Coast Guards members, civilians, dependents, retirees and several members of the Elizabeth City community attended the event on February 20th at ECSU’s K.E. White center. VADM Michael McAllister, Deputy Commandant for Mission Support along with RADM Keith Smith, Commander Fifth District hosted the event and participated in an extensive Q&A following the Commandant’s speech. In celebration of Black History Month, BASE Elizabeth City’s Special Emphasis Program hosted a highly successful event with Master Chief (ret) Tyrone Anderson Jr, Master Chief (ret) Lisa Spotwood, BM1 (ret) Clarence Neely and SK2/GS14 (ret) James Wimbish as guest speakers. Master Chief (ret) Spotwood became the first African-American female Master Chief Food Service Specialist when she was advanced to E-9 in August of 2004. As we head into March, we will all hope to see some better (warmer) weather as we prepare for another big transfer season.

American Legion
This year will be especially significant when it comes to honoring and remembering our comrades. Countless commemorations will document the end of World War II, which of course occurred 75 years ago this year.
While many of the heroes of that war have passed on, there are still some who walk with us, from those who endured the attack on Pearl Harbor to those who braved the cold at the Battle of the Bulge to those who exacted revenge on Japan, we will pay tribute to their sacrifice and others who secured victory for America and its allies.
