Progress on the COVID Vaccine Front
Since we originally received our Pfizer COVID Vaccines in late December, 2020, the Base Elizabeth City clinic has administered over 1800 vaccines to Active duty, Reserve, and civilian employees spanning all types of Coast Guard units across the state of North Carolina. I’ve sent them down to Wilmington and Atlantic Beach to distribute the vaccines to units to our south, and they’ve been up to Base Portsmouth to assist with vaccinations in Virginia. They’ve even worked with Air Station Elizabeth City to move the vaccine by air to support Coast Guard Cutters in Charleston, SC. It has been a busy couple months – but we’re really making good progress in vaccinating our crews. I was thankful to receive my vaccine after reviewing the available information on it, and had very little symptomatic response following the first and second doses. Coast Guard wide, we’ve successfully distributed over 38,000 vaccinations. Here in E-City, we were also happy to be able to support the Albemarle Regional Health Services vaccination events being held nearby at the Elizabeth City Regional Airport. Like most, I’m looking forward to the day when the COVID-19 pandemic is no longer a threat.
On other exciting news, I wanted to also provide a quick update for the Coast Guard Half-Marathon and 5K which as you read this - is rapidly approaching! We are not the only ones excited about the Coast Guard’s first official road race … over 6,000 registrants have joined up to be part of the inaugural crew to run this race in March. Current registrants hail from all 50 states plus DC, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands as well as 10 countries and 4 different continents. I am glad to see the excitement for this event continue to swell and hope that you’re joining in! If you are interested, more details of this event can be found at CoastGuardRun.com or by contacting the Visit Elizabeth City staff.
Hope after all the rain over the last month or so, you’re keeping safe and dry! Remember even the coastal waters remain cold into early to mid-April – if you’re heading out in a boat, be prepared to be in the cold water in an emergency. Your preparation gives us time to get there so we can all talk about it afterwards!

Elizabeth City Habitat For Humanity
|
|
Sheetrock is now up and walls are painted in the new Habitat for Humanity house. We are getting excited about the progress that we have made but we’re not done yet! There’s a lot still to be done before our new homeowner can move in.
The end of construction is always expensive, and we are looking for donors to help with those expenses. Items that we still need: interior doors ($1400 for 9), ceiling fans ($300 for 5), light fixtures ($150 for 3), and bathroom lights ($90 for 2). We will also need unfinished kitchen cabinets and closet wire shelving but we don’t have exact measurements or costs at this time.
We also need volunteers for this final finishing stage. The youngest person on our construction crew will get his Medicare card in a few months. We need young volunteers! This is a great opportunity for businesses and offices to donate a few hours to a good cause. We usually work from 9-12, Tuesday to Saturday. To address safety concerns, we are limiting the number of people on site to 6 and we provide masks. Contact Jane Elfring, 252-384-0115, for information if you can help.
