Spring has Sprung
I hope everyone got an opportunity to take a breather this month and enjoy some type of a Spring Break, even if it was only for a weekend. We have certainly had enough exciting weather to keep us on our toes. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our community partners who helped the Spouse's Club throw a fabulous Spring Fling event for our members and their children. On that same day, the Coast Guard Coalition (Chief Petty Officer's Association, Chief Warrant Officer's Assoc., Coast Guard Enlisted Association, Military Officer's Assoc and the E-City Spouse's Club) held a "Give Back To The Community Pig Picking" event where they cooked 20 hogs and served over 2200 members of our community in an effort to give back to the community for all of the support that was provided during the lapse in government funding. They also hand delivered meals to folks who couldn't get away from their workplace including healthcare professionals at Sentara. The next month will be filled with several great opportunities to get out and join friends and family throughout the community for some great reputable events. United Way will have their second annual Bocce, Beer and Bites event at Waterfront Park on April 27
th
. It was a really fun event last year and I encourage you all to attend. The Military Affairs Committee will host their annual Military Appreciation Luncheon on May 15 at the CPOA facility. I hope to see you all there. Tickets are available at the Chamber. In addition, CDR Judge (BASE Executive Officer) is winding down to the end of his tour at the Base. Please reach out for an opportunity to say Thanks for all of the great things he has done during his three years here. Thanks to everyone for your partnership with the Coast Guard and we look forward to next big community event - Potato Festival!

Save the Dates for the 2019 NC Potato Festival - May 17-19
Can you believe 2019 North Carolina Potato Festival is just a few weeks away?! The festival will be held May 17, 18, and 19 in downtown Elizabeth City. This year's theme is "Eat, Shop, and Play Downtown," in recognition and celebration of all our downtown businesses and to celebrate the amazing growth and progress happening in downtown. Plan for the annual National Potato Peeling Contest, the Little Miss Tater Tot Contest, midway rides and games, the blocks-long Auto and Bike Show, free French fries (while they last), Cornhole Tournament, the CGEA 5K Run, lots of vendors, interesting as well as traditional festival foods, and an amazing lineup of local and nationally-known musicians throughout the three-day event. And so much more!
There are still volunteer opportunities available, Potato Peeling slots, Cornhole Tournament team slots, and, of course, sponsorship opportunities.
Register your team for the National Potato Peeling Contest (sponsored by Sentara Albemarle and Southern Bank) as part of the 2019 NC Potato Festival. The team peeling contest is always a big part of the annual festival. You can be a CHAMPION for your favorite non-profit! This year, the North Carolina Potato Festival will make a donation in the amount of $500 on behalf of the winning team to a designated non-profit of your choice. This is a team event, but individual awards will still be presented, as well. Trophies are important, but nothing matches the sheer fun of getting your group together and sharing the spotlight when the 2019 NATIONAL POTATO PEELING CHAMP AND TEAM are crowned. And the added benefit of winning $500 for your favorite non-profit. Click
HERE
for the Peeling Contest registration form and to sign up your team. Do it soon! There is a limit number of team slots. 252-338-4104; elizabethcitydowntown@embarqmail.com

Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity
|
|
Perhaps the most widely known aspect of Habitat for Humanity is the work done by the construction committee. Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity is in the process of choosing a partner family for a new house to be constructed this year on 5
th Street and we need lots of help to make this happen.
We need a construction supervisor or two (to share the duties). This person is responsible for making sure all materials are ordered and on site when needed, tracks expenses of the build, follows Habitat safety procedures and assigns tasks to volunteers working on the build site.
But the construction supervisor can't do anything without a dedicated group of volunteers. Volunteers don't have to be experienced. We work with volunteers to explain the tasks that need to be completed. Families selected for houses are required to complete sweat equity hours on the job site as well. Times required to volunteer vary but we generally plan on 3-5 hours each workdays and Saturdays.
Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity utilizes volunteers to help with the foundation, setting walls in place, installing windows and doors, installing siding, installing trim work, and painting. We work with contractors to install plumbing, HVAC, drywall, roofing and flooring. We also work with the City of Elizabeth City to install insulation and weatherproofing.
If you are interested in working on the Construction Committee, contact Jane Elfring,
jelfri@bellatlantic.net, 252-384-0115, for further information.
