Albemarle Regional Health Services (ARHS) and the hospitals in the Albemarle region of care including Vidant Bertie, Vidant Chowan, Vidant Roanoke-Chowan, and Sentara Albemarle Medical Center are working together to complete the comprehensive 2022 Community Health Needs Assessment. ARHS and the hospitals would value your input as well as the opinions of others in your network and community.
This assessment is being undertaken by a partnership of 33 counties across Eastern North Carolina. It allows partners to better understand the health status and needs of the community and use the knowledge gained to implement programs that will benefit the region.
This survey allows community members like you to tell us about what you feel are important issues for your community. We estimate that it will take about 10 minutes to complete the question survey. Your answers to these questions will be kept confidential and anonymous. Please complete the survey by May 15, 2021.
Please share this link broadly, with anyone you know including employees, civic organizations, clubs, faith-based or community groups! Participation from our community members in Pasquotank, Perquimans, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Bertie, Gates, and Hertford counties will be invaluable.
Once we have gathered all of the surveys, we plan to compile this information and use it to develop a community health improvement plan with our community public health partners.
Thank you for taking time to help identify our most pressing health problems and issues to make our community a better and healthier place to live!
Thank you,

Elizabeth City Habitat For Humanity
|
|
There are many misconceptions about Habitat for Humanity houses. The most common that affiliates hear is that Habitat houses are free. This has never been true. Homeowners must qualify for the houses and be able to pay the no interest mortgage. Their payment covers principal, taxes and insurance. In addition, they must also be willing to complete sweat equity hours on the construction of their house and have a need which we verify during a home visit.
Another misconception is that we receive funding from Habitat for Humanity International. Each Habitat affiliate is financially independent. Though we receive items from the Gift in Kind program that HFHI has with various corporations, we receive no funding from HFHI and have to do our own fundraising to pay for home construction.
Homeowner principal payments are deposited to our Building Fund for new home construction or rehab work. Those payments amount of approximately $36,000 per year, not nearly enough to build a new house. Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity actively seeks corporate and individual sponsors to make up the shortfall. Building costs have increased significantly since we started this house last summer and some of the corporate sponsors have been unable to help with items this year.
Sponsors on our current build include Wells Fargo, Mr. Rogers Windows, ABC Supply, Homefix Remodeling, H&H Electric, B&M HVAC, Atlantic Mobilityand Albemarle Area Association of REALTORS. Their monetary and in-kind donations have saved us thousands of dollars but we have still had many expenses and cost overruns.
If you or your business would like to donate, contact Norma James at Taylor Mueller Realty, 331-2233. You can designate your donation for a specific item (lumber, flooring, kitchen cabinets, etc) or general building expenses.

Northeast Academy for Aerostat & Advanced Technologies
|
|
The Northeast Academy for Aerospace and Advanced Technologies (NEAAAT) was awarded a $14,906 grant through the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Coding and Mobile App Grant. The grant has provided professional development for NEAAAT instructors in computer science applications and implementation in Project-Based Learning experiences. The grant also engages the 104 8th-grade NEAAAT students in a computer science activity of designing, engineering, and coding their own Micro:bit watch.
The Micro:bit is a tiny handheld programmable computer. The Micro:bit has small led lights which can flash messages, motion sensors, and they can be hooked up to other devices through cables and Bluetooth technology. 8th-grade NEAAAT students used the Micro:bit to make a watch capable of recording steps like a pedometer, record body temperature, and monitor air equality in their immediate environment. Research has proven that each of these health indicators (exercise, body temperature, and air quality) have a direct correlation to maintaining health during the COVID-19 pandemic. The students coded the Micro:bit and sensors using Python programming through a partnership with Jeffries Epps, CEO of STEMERALD City, LLC.
After achieving their first milestone of 50,000 steps, each 8th-grade student will receive a "Griffin Card". The NEAAAT mascot is the griffin. This idea was born from NEAAAT's FIRST LEGO League Team #51733, the Robo-Griffins, Innovation Project, "Walk-a-Bit Downtown". The middle grades team wanted to get more students moving because they have researched and seen the negative effects of restricted mobility due to COVID-19 restrictions, such as weight gain and effects on mood. The Griffin Card will have discounts from downtown businesses, such as 10% off of a purchase and a free drink. It is the hope that students and their families will get out, exercise, and visit Elizabeth City's downtown shops. The FLL team worked with Debbie Malenfant of Elizabeth City Downtown, Inc. to develop the project. This Project-Based Learning experience has connected our students to (1) computer science literacy through coding, (2) partnerships to promote shopping with local businesses, (3) increase connectivity with our community, by walking downtown, and (4) awareness of COVID-19 health indicators.
Businesses partnering with NEAAAT for the "Walk-a-Bit Downtown" project-based learning experience include:
