We had a blast at our 11
th Annual Golf Classic on October 25
th at
YMCA at The Pines! Beginning with the day's perfect weather and ending with our exciting Golf Ball Drop Raffle and Awards Ceremony, the event was a huge success. Golfers enjoyed lunch provided by
Pepsi Bottling Ventures and
Firehouse Subs before heading out onto the course. While on the course, they enjoyed beer provided by
City Beverage Company, and they took a shot at the Hole in One Challenge sponsored by
Perry Auto Group.
Once all teams finished their round of golf, we headed over to the practice range to watch the inaugural Golf Ball Drop Raffle, sponsored by
B&M Contractors and Mitsubishi Electric.
Anna Biggs won the $500 prize, as her ball rolled closest to the hole. The awards ceremony, sponsored by
Vidant Chowan Hospital, featured a beer tasting from
Ghost Harbor Brewing Company. Congratulations to
1st Place Team - Albemarle Lanes, and
2nd Place Team - McDonald's!
Many thanks to our Golf Committee members, who gave their time and efforts to planning this event and thank you to the event volunteers who helped the day run so smoothly! Special thanks to our event sponsors, hole sponsors, and everyone who purchased raffle tickets - we appreciate your support!
We will kick off our 2
nd year of

Trick or Treat!
These months seem to pass faster each year. Our units stayed busy this month; the Aviation Technical Training Center (ATTC) graduated one of its largest Rescue Swimmer classes in several years with 11 successful graduates. They also graduated a class of 15 Aviation Maintenance Technicians. Senior representatives from each command and Coast Guard District Five represented at the annual Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Summit with an impressive 6 schools represented. The National Strike Force Coordination Center (NSFCC) continued operations in the Bahamas following Dorian and remained extremely busy with recovery ops on the M/V Golden Bay (tipped auto freighter). The boat station provided static displays at local elementary schools and supported local Boy Scout troops. Air Station Elizabeth City performed an impressive SAR demonstration during the Aviation Day held on the civilian portion of the airport. Along with the arrival of Fall came our traditional cooler weather. While I personally do not prefer the cooler weather, I know many of you do. For me, it just means my summer boating season has come to an end. What I do enjoy is the crazy hurricane season "cooling" down. We had a great time this month supporting the installation of Chancellor Dixon at ECSU. Our troops and their dependents had a great time supporting the annual Ghost Walk. A great time was had by all. Our spouse's club enjoyed a beautiful day for their Harvest Festival and Trunk or Treat on base. We had over 25 trunk or treat participants in that event and the chili cook-off was great! I hope everyone has a blessed Thanksgiving season. Stay warm.

Congratulations to Melanie Metzler, Service/Marketing Manager at B&M Contractors, our Ambassador of the Month!
Melanie has been with B&M Contractors, Inc. for a little over 2 ½ years. She started there as the Service Coordinator and now has moved into the role of Marketing/Service Director. She resides in Virginia Beach and commutes every day due to the fact that she absolutely loves working with the team at B&M. If you ask her about B&M, she will tell you that being with a company that is truly invested in doing the right thing for employees, customers and the community as a whole means the world to her. Her goal is to spotlight B&M Contractors throughout the area so that everyone can see what she sees daily working there. She is energetic, determined and brings a positive vibe to all that she does. She became an Ambassador for the Elizabeth City Chamber of Commerce in August 2019 and has been Ambassador of the month for both the months of September and October. She has taken on two sectors, in which she is a true liaison between the member and the Chamber. The members in her sectors have provided positive feedback and for that we are thankful to have her on board. Per Melanie - "I love the opportunity to cross promote and network with the multiple businesses in the area. Becoming an Ambassador for the Chamber has brought many strengths brought to myself as individual, B&M Contractors, the chamber members and the Chamber as a whole. I believe in putting your all into what you and do fully utilizing the resources you have within the Chamber. If we all do that, no doubt, the community will continue to grow and prosper. I am excited to see what we can do!"

Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity
|
|
A safe home. Nutritious food. Health care. Good schools. Reliable transportation. Which would you choose? Nearly 19 million US households, or 1 in 6 families, pay more half or more of their income for a place to live.
In Pasquotank County, more than 50% of households pay more than 30% for housing. That significantly impacts their ability to pay for other items such as food and health care.
Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity has joined Habitat for Humanity International's Cost of Home Campaign, a national five-year advocacy campaign, to increase the number of affordable housing units in the United States.
There are four themes of this campaign: expanding resources for home production (through tax credits for affordable housing, housing trust funds, and expanding existing resources), increasing access to credit (through down payment assistance programs, expanding financial education and combating predatory lending), enabling equitable access to land (by streamlining land use approvals, improved zoning ordinances and inclusionary housing policies) and developing communities of opportunity (by expanding home repair/modification assistance, and "just cause" eviction laws).
Members of the Elizabeth City Affordable Housing group identified expanding resources for housing construction as a primary area of focus but also recognized the need for down payment assistance programs and financial literacy education.
