The Business Expo Tailgate Party was a winner! Over 40 businesses showcased their products and services to attendees of our biggest networking event of the year. The exhibitors were creative in using the football theme to their advantage, and our winners this year were:

Our beverage sponsors, City Beverage Company and Pepsi Bottling Ventures kept the crowd hydrated and refreshed, while DJ Trent provided music and entertainment.

Hurricane Season Woke Up!

What had originally appeared to be a sleepy hurricane season certainly shook things up when Dorian came along. While the Outer Banks certainly experienced some significant damage, I think we can all consider ourselves blessed in comparison to our neighbors in the Bahamas. Air Station Elizabeth City flew 120 hours of Search and Rescue missions locally, saving two lives and assisting five others. In addition, they transported 125 storm survivors and 61,000 pounds of cargo for our Caribbean neighbors. You may have also seen the amazing support of the motor vessel Golden Ray which rolled over off of the coast of Georgia, trapping several crewmembers inside. What the national coverage did not call out was that our Coast Guardsman from the National Strike Force Coordination Center right here in Elizabeth City were/are on scene conducting air monitoring, shoreline assessment and preps salvage operations. We also had a lot of important folks in town this month as the Coast Guard held their Aviation Commanding Officer's (COs) conference here at the Aviation Logistics Center. COs were on board all week from every air station in the Coast Guard. Over and above that we had a wealth of senior Coast Guard leadership in town for the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Summit held at ECSU! Our increasingly strong partnership with several HBCUs has been an extremely positive attribute for all parties. Many of the COs were pleased to say that they enjoyed seeing how much Elizabeth City has improved, particularly in the downtown area. On the business side of the house, you likely already read in the Daily Advance that the Aviation Logistics Center (ALC) awarded an 83 million dollar contract for helicopter depot maintenance. The contract is for one base year and four option years. All work will remain in the local area. The Base also awarded a 14.8 million dollar contract to repair two taxi ways and the compass rose/helo pad, replace the entire runway lighting system with upgraded LEDs on runway 10-28, and install a new approach lighting system. Our spouse's club will be joining forces with our MWR staff to host a Harvest Festival and Trunk or Treat on base. We always look forward to the opportunity for our folks to get out and enjoy these events. See you in
October!

Albemarle Plantation

American Legion

During our 101st National Convention, a change to the American Legion's National Constitution and Bylaws was approved to welcome "spouses" rather than just "wives" as members of an American Legion Auxiliary unit. The LEGION Act alone creates an opportunity to engage and add up to 4.2 million new members who were not eligible under the previous standards set by Congress. And, of course, the LEGION Act also means that sons and grandsons of these new eligible veterans are now able to become members of Sons of The American Legion.

Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity

A safe home. Nutritious food. Health care. Good schools. Reliable transportation. Which would you choose? Nearly 19 million US households, or 1 in 6 families, pay more half or more of their income for a place to live.
In Pasquotank County, more than 50% of households pay more than 30% for housing. That significantly impacts their ability to pay for other items such as food and health care.
Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity has joined Habitat for Humanity International's Cost of Home Campaign, a national five-year advocacy campaign, to increase the number of affordable housing units in the United States.
There are four themes of this campaign: expanding resources for home production (through tax credits for affordable housing, housing trust funds, and expanding existing resources), increasing access to credit (through down payment assistance programs, expanding financial education and combating predatory lending), enabling equitable access to land (by streamlining land use approvals, improved zoning ordinances and inclusionary housing policies) and developing communities of opportunity (by expanding home repair/modification assistance, and "just cause" eviction laws).
Members of the Elizabeth City Affordable Housing group identified expanding resources for housing construction as a primary area of focus but also recognized the need for down payment assistance programs and financial literacy education.
If you would like to work with us on this effort, please contact us at [email protected].

Most of us know Halloween to be a fun and festive holiday. However, to pet dogs and cats, this spooky celebration can cause unusual behavior, even from the most docile of animals. Having a bunch of kids running around at night in scary costumes, with flashlights shining and haunted noises can make even calm pets anxious and on alert. If you own a pet dog or cat and live in a neighborhood that has trick-or-treaters, follow some helpful safety tips that will ensure everyone stays safe. Please visit http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/halloween-safety-tips for more information. We hope everyone has a safe and fun Halloween!
