New Commanding Officer
On 31 July, I had the pleasure of relieving CAPT Randy Meador as the Base Elizabeth City Commanding officer. For those who were not able to view the largely virtual ceremony via Facebook Live, the event was certainly bittersweet for CAPT Meador and he spent significant time during the formal ceremony remarking on Elizabeth City’s exceptional community support of Coast Guard members as well as his appreciation of the critical partnerships throughout the various community organizations and greater Elizabeth City business community.
While I could not have been more enthusiastic for my newly assumed military responsibilities, CAPT Meador’s high praise for all our Elizabeth City partnerships was a great reminder of how symbiotic this Coast Guard Community is and impressed upon me the expansive nature of my new role. With that, I’d like to briefly introduce myself as I look forward to getting to know Elizabeth City and her residents.
Originally from rural Wisconsin, upon graduation from High School, I attended the United States Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut. Since graduation and commissioning from the Academy, I’ve been stationed in the Hampton Roads area three times, but also was assigned to Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington D.C., served as Chief Engineer of USCGC MIDGETT out of Seattle, WA and as the Industrial Manager at a Naval Engineering maintenance facility in Boston, MA.
I also spent two years earning graduate degrees from Virginia Tech. My academic background is in Naval Engineering which includes the operations, maintenance and repair of ships and boats, but recently my role in the Coast Guard has been more focused on the delivery of mission support services to operational units. My most important job is keeping track of two children, Addison (10) and Cade (9) – they strive to keep it lively, challenging and interesting at all times.
I look forward to meeting many of you and doing my best to support the Elizabeth City Community. Thanks in advance for your continued support of the Coast Guard!

If it is September, it must be time for the Albemarle Area United Way to host Day of Caring! Despite the craziness of the pandemic, we are still planning on proceeding with a “version” of Day of Caring on Friday, September 18.
Traditionally, Day of Caring has been an all-volunteer event where folks roll up their sleeves and work together to make a difference in our community. This year the AAUW has 5 Partner Agencies who have asked for assistance on that day as well as a virtual option that we are coordinating with the Albemarle Commission.
They have two programs (Cards of Encouragement and Letters of Love) in place where volunteers write personal notes to older adults in hopes of decreasing their sense of isolation.

Girl Scouts Announces 24 New Badges for Girls
Girl Scouts of Colonial Coast will soon be creating a new virtual program around the 24 new badges that were released by Girl Scouts of the USA in late July. These badges are designed to help girls practice ambitious leadership in the areas of automotive engineering, STEM career exploration, entrepreneurship, and civics, many of which remain male-dominated.
"We want to remind girls that all career paths are open to them," said Tracy Keller, the chief executive officer for the Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast. "These badges will encourage girls to explore STEM more. We are seeing a strong interest in STEM, the same interest we see in boys but research shows girls don't stay interested in STEM through high school, through college, and into career fields. There are a lot of factors, including not being encouraged and not having role models.”
STEM is just one area of focus these new badges cover. Others include civics and entrepreneurship. The new badges will be the foundation for a new virtual curriculum being developed to offer to local girls.
"We offer virtual programs, and hopefully in-person program in the near future, that fosters an environment where girls feel comfortable enough to continue and follow their passions which includes pursuing STEM. These badges will work to promote age-appropriate lessons and the knowledge as to how certain fields work such as automotive engineering from start to finish."
New badges include age appropriate education in various topics like “Toy Business Designer” and “Automotive Manufacturing” where girls will dig into the processes involved in today’s industries and dream up the future.
The Girl Scouts currently have virtual opportunities for girls K-12 grades in August that cover areas such as cybersecurity, environmental science and financial literacy. On August 26, they are partnering with WHRO TV-15 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment with a free virtual event that is being followed by a panel discussion. This is open to the public and Girl Scouts can use this opportunity as a way to work towards one of the new civic badges.

Why Hire a Management Company for Your Rental Property?
It is not just about placing a tenant in your property. It is about finding the tenant that best fits your property. Fees charged by a management company are typically for finding a tenant, this means advertising your property doing background/credit checks and managing the property. Monthly management includes collecting the rent, and any other fees associated with the property, handling repairs, inspections and dealing with early vacancies and even evictions if necessary and much more. The day to day operations of a rental property can be a daunting task to the novice investor/landlord.
