Message from Our CEO

I am aware that I write to you at a time in which we are overwhelmed and challenged and maybe even frozen in place about the state of affairs in the US, Israel and elsewhere around the world. We wonder what we can do and how we can make a positive impact.

I recognize that I am very fortunate to lead an organization whose mission I am passionate about and where all of us make collective impact. I invite you to join us as we work to protect and expand women's rights and priorities, and build a just and equitable society.

This past year proved just how dramatically and quickly the world can change for women and minority groups. In the US, we have seen the roll back of abortion access, protections against domestic violence, and policies for women in the workplace. We have seen the purposeful erasure of women at the federal level, resulting in cuts to women's health research and funding, slashes in resources for nonprofits, and more. Each day seems to bring a new assault, and a new challenge.

In Israel, we are relieved to have the living hostages returned home, but we remain immensely aware of the short and long term impact of the October 7 massacre and the war in Gaza on all involved.

Here at Elluminate, we are surrounded and inspired by amazing Jewish women leaders, all visionaries and doers who we invest in and partner with. They are each proactively devising solutions to these pressing and urgent concerns and reenvisioning the world through a gender lens.

The quickly approaching Elluminate Convening is a strategic and critical space for Jewish women advancing equity and justice — tikkun olam — to come together with a gender lens to light a path forward in the US and Israel and around the world. At this moment, we are called to action and invite you to join us and pull up a seat at our collective table.

Warmly,

Melanie Roth Gorelick

CEO, Elluminate

Elluminate Board Visits Eldridge Street Museum

Elluminate Board members took a private tour of the Museum of Eldridge Street and had the opportunity to explore the 1887 Eldridge Street Synagogue, the first great house of worship built by Eastern European Jewish immigrants in the United States. This magnificent National Historic Landmark has been lovingly restored and today is a touchstone of the Lower East Side immigrant experience. We congratulate our Board member Bonnie Dimun, CEO of the Museum, for this amazing restoration completion. The Museum was recently named the top 16th building to visit in the world by Time Out magazine.

Professor Ruth Halperin-Kaddari on the Challenges Women Face in Israel

Elluminate cosponsored a special briefing October 21st on the challenges facing women in Israel and across the globe, featuring Professor Ruth Halperin-Kaddari, a renowned women’s rights advocate and Founding Academic Director at the Rackman Center for the Advancement of Women at Bar-Ilan University. The program was sponsored in partnership with Hadassah Foundation, The Dinah Project and the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan.

The conversation between Ruth and Rabbi Joanna Samuels, CEO of the JCC, was candid and deeply moving. Together, they reflected on the state of women’s rights in Israel, the responsibility we all share to confront denial and injustice, and the power of optimism and persistence in the face of adversity.

Ruth shared her leadership experiences with the Dinah Project, including successful advocacy with the UN to recognize and seek justice for victims of sexual violence and crimes perpetrated on October 7. This included ensuring that the UN label Hamas as a terrorist organization.
