For the third straight game the Jackals found themselves on the scoreboard first thanks to Jordan Pietrus. Darren Kramer, who came into the game with a three-game goal streak, whistled a pass from low on the left wing to a streaking Pietrus and he slammed a one-timer past Reading's Philipp Grubauer 5:51 into the game. The goal was Pietrus' third of the season. Despite eight other shots the Jackals couldn't extend their lead any further. Maxime Clermont, who made his second straight start, turned away the five shots he faced to keep the score in the Jackals' favor.
In the second Elmira's offense was even more effective at generating shots, but Grubauer found his groove and swatted away all 12 that the Jackals sent his way. Clermont was busier, as well, with Reading testing him 10 times. It turned out to be a wrist shot from the right wing by Jesse Todd that eluded Clermont with 8:36 gone by that knotted the score.
In the third period Elmira had a pair of power play chances to try to break the deadlock, including one with just 7:47 left to play, but couldn't find a way to dent Grubauer again. Clermont was just as stingy at the other end of the ice as he matched Grubauer save-for-save. The goaltenders duel moved to overtime after 60 minutes weren't enough to decide a winner.
Late third-period penalties to Patrick Wellar and Dustin Gazley left the teams playing 3-on-3 to start overtime, but despite all the open ice there wasn't much offense generated. It was back at 4-on-4 hockey when Brett Flemming wristed a shot from the right wing and Ian O'Connor tipped it past Clermont for the winning score. The goal came 2:36 into overtime.
Clermont stopped 23 shots while taking the loss. Elmira was 0-for-2 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.Mark your calendars!
