WSKG Locally Sourced Newsletter Header

Hello Sourcers! As usual, there’s lots to get to this week, so let’s…ahem…dig right in.

🛘 Dirt!

👑 Elvis!

🎶 Music!

🎭 Theater!

Let’s start off in Oneonta, where Wednesday June 24th is Dig Dirt Day with the Oneonta World of Learning. Starting at 1pm, folks will have the opportunity to experience a real archeological dig on Pine Lake, as the field school investigates camp sites dating from the Late Archaic period (c. 3000-1000 BCE). Tickets are required to actually dig, but there will be other family activities throughout the day, and also, Pine Lake is just a beautiful spot.

Elsewhere, strange goings on in Ithaca, where Elvis sightings have been on the rise. Next Thursday (giving you some advance warning), K-House Karaoke & Arts Hub is hosting One Night With You: An Elvis Dinner Show, which is…exactly what it sounds like. Dinner and a show with an Elvis impersonator, including songs, stories, and guest appearances. This event has been held a couple times this year, and I keep missing it, but I can say that I’ve run into the star of the show around town, and his hair is immaculate.

In Endicott, a summer concert series with an absolutely packed schedule starts off this weekend, as Music in the Glen launches at Glendale Park. The series presents bands and performers on Tuesdays and Saturdays throughout the summer, and the first show will be Simmerin’ Stew, a local four-piece string band playing roots and Americana tunes. The show is on Tuesday, June 23rd at 6pm, and it’s free and open to the public.

Finally, one that I’m pretty excited about: the Hangar Theater’s production of Fun Home opens this weekend and runs through June 27th. Fun Home is based on the must-read graphic novel by Alison Bechdel, and the musical adaptation, which debuted on Broadway in 2015, won five Tony awards and was a finalist for the Pulitzer. This is the kickoff to the Hangar’s summer mainstage season, and just one of the dozens of summer theater opportunities around the region. Almost seems like we should get our own Amelia Pena to revive her Acting Up column, huh?

More on that soon.

A couple quick mentions on WSKG events: Thursday night at 7pm, I’ll be guest hosting our Trampoline storytelling competition at Liquid State Brewing in Ithaca. The theme is Teamwork Makes The Dream Work, so come help me out. And on Monday June 22nd, we’re hosting a screening of The Niagara Movement, a documentary about the early days of the Civil Rights movement, with a Q&A after by Cornell history professor Edward Baptist. It's at Cinemapolis in Ithaca at 6pm, and you can reserve tickets here.

And have you signed up for Completely Booked yet? The kickoff event at New Leaf Cider is right around the corner!

Hope to see you soon, Sourcers!

Yours,
