ART EXHIBIT OPENING: FRAGMENTS OF FRENZY by CARLOS SALAZAR ARENAS

On behalf of the Department of Art and Creative Media

Carlos Salazar Arenas is a Colombian artist whose work explores political realities of his home country of Colombia. Over the years, he has expanded his themes, covering political events of great relevance worldwide like the terrorist attacks in Madrid, London, the United States, international war, protests, riots in different parts of the world, and the fall of the New York Stock Exchange in 2008.

His artwork is composed of sets of paintings that address themes around which Salazar Arenas intends the viewer to recognize by referencing appropriated media that may be of general knowledge. His use of monochrome and stain gives the images a new perspective. Salazar Arenas’ work is currently represented by Galería Fernando Padilla in Madrid, Spain and Galería El Museo in Bogotà, Colombia.

Salazar Arenas’ work belongs to multiple private and public collections such as: Colección del Banco de la República (Collection of the Bank of the Republic), Bogotá, Colombia, Colección BBVA Banco (Bank) Ganadero, Bogotá, Colombia, Colección Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores (Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Bogotá, Colombia. Colección Museo de Arte Moderno, Bogotá Colombia, Colección Art Madrid, Madrid, Spain.

Hispanic Serving Institutions Week with Dr. Gina Ann Garcia!

On behalf of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Hispanic Serving Initiatives, & Heritage Months

Dr. Gina Ann Garcia is a professor in the School of Education at UC Berkeley. Her research centers on issues of equity and justice in higher education with an emphasis on understanding how Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) embrace and enact an organizational identity for serving minoritized populations. She explores the experiences of administrators, faculty, and staff at HSIs and the outcomes of students attending these institutions. As an equity-minded scholar, she tends to the ways that race and racism have shaped institutions of higher education.

Dr. Garcia is the author of Becoming Hispanic-Serving Institutions: Opportunities for Colleges & Universities for which she won the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education Book of the Year Award in 2020 and the editor of the book Hispanic-Serving Institutions in Practice: Defining “Servingness” at HSIs. Her newest book, Transforming Hispanic Serving Institutions for Equity and Justice was released in Spring 2023 and is now available. Read more at https://www.ginaanngarcia.com/about

Crip Spacetime: Access, Failure, and Accountability in Academic Life (Duke UP, 2024), Dr. Margaret Price

On behalf of Disability Resources

Drawing upon her open-source book Crip Spacetime: Access, Failure, and Accountability in Academic Life (Duke UP, 2024), Dr. Margaret Price argues for a turn toward collective accountability in order to make academe more accessible for all marginalized persons. Rejecting individual accommodation as a means to access, Dr. Price draws upon established work in Black Feminist Studies and disability studies to argue for the value of collectivity and gathering. Her presentation draws upon a survey and interview study conducted with more than 300 disabled faculty and staff members. She closes with a discussion of accountability and gathering in order to point the way toward more sustainable and restorative ways of moving together in academic spacetimes.

Margaret Price, PhD, is a genderqueer femme and scholar of rhetoric, disability studies, and qualitative methods. Her first book, Mad at School: Rhetorics of Mental Disability and Academic Life (University of Michigan Press, 2011), won the Outstanding Book Award from the Conference on College Composition & Communication (CCCC). Price is co-PI of the Transformative Access Project and received a 2020 Fulbright Research Award. She is an avid knitter and inline skater. Dr. Price is an Associate Professor in the Department of English and Director of the Disability Studies Program at The Ohio State University.

Sponsored by AccessADVANCE & funded by the National Science Foundation, Grant #EES-2017017 & 2017054.

NEW: Phishing Scams: What Every College Student Needs to Know

On behalf of the Department of Information Security

College students are prime targets for phishing scams—cyberattacks where criminals pose as trusted entities to steal personal information like passwords or bank details. These scams often come via fraudulent emails or texts that look legitimate but are designed to trick you.

Why College Students Are Targeted:

Financial Inexperience: Many students are managing finances for the first time.

Campus Networks: Public Wi-Fi can be less secure.

Busy Schedules: Students are more likely to click quickly without caution.

Lack of Awareness: Not all students are educated on cybersecurity.

Common Phishing Scams:

University IT Scams: Fake emails ask you to “fix” your account via fraudulent links.

Scholarship/Financial Aid Scams: Phony offers seek sensitive info.

Job Scams: Fake job offers ask for personal details or upfront payments.

Fake Online Deals: Scammers set up fraudulent stores to steal payment info.

How to Spot a Phishing Scam:

Suspicious Sender: Unfamiliar email addresses with slight misspellings.

Urgent Language: Messages threatening account suspension or penalties.

Errors: Misspellings or odd grammar in the message.

Unverified Links: Hover over links to check the URL’s legitimacy.

Sensitive Info Requests: Legit organizations won’t ask for personal details via email.

How to Protect Yourself:

Verify the Source: Always confirm the legitimacy of messages before clicking.

Use Two-Factor Authentication: Adds extra security to accounts.

Keep Software Updated: Ensure all devices and apps are up-to-date.

Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Sensitive Tasks: Use a VPN if necessary.

Report Suspicious Activity: Notify your university or relevant organizations.

What to Do If You’ve Been Phished:

Change your passwords immediately.

Alert your bank if your financial info is compromised.

Monitor accounts for suspicious activity.

Stay vigilant, and always think before you click!

Schools with HEART Conference

On behalf of CIHHI/CTLL/DEI

Esteemed colleagues,

This past spring, a mighty snowstorm forced me to postpone the Schools with HEART conference. Schools with HEART are Health-oriented, Equitable, Accessible, Culturally Responsive, and Trauma-Informed.

But, it is on again!

This free, one-day hybrid conference is scheduled for Friday, October 4th.

I encourage you and those you work with (faculty and staff) to come spend the day connecting with colleagues, listening to and sharing ideas about how best to promote our students' (and our own) well-being and how to help promote students' academic success.

I'm excited to announce that District 60 and 70 educators will be joining us at this conference as both superintendents approved it as a professional development opportunity. It's important for us to communicate across the educational spectrum to more fully understand and meet the needs of our (future) students.

Hope to see you there!
