CSU Pueblo to Host Series of Townhalls and Events ahead of November Election

Pueblo, COLO – Colorado State University Pueblo’s Political Science program and Southern Colorado Center for Politics and Public Affairs are set to host a series of Townhalls and events this fall, featuring elected officials for local and national office. The series aims to foster engagement between the university, the community, students, and political candidates during the 2024 election cycle.

The inaugural event, scheduled for Sept. 3 at 3 PM in GCB 201 will feature State Representative Tisha Mauro (D-Pueblo). This Townhall, along with others in the series, is open to the public, encouraging community participation alongside students.

“It is an honor and privilege to participate in the democratic process and welcome political candidates to the CSU Pueblo campus for a Townhall about the most important issues affecting our region and country,” said Eddie Lucero, assistant professor of political science. “We believe in an honest interchange of ideas and perspectives is the bedrock of an informed electorate, which is why we are enthusiastically and impartially hosting political events to educate not just our students and campus community but the wider constituency as well.”

Brown Bag Luncheon - Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

On behalf of the Center for Integrated Health and Human Inquiry

On September 16th from 12pm-1pm, the Center for Integrated Health and Human Inquiry (CIHHI) will host a lunch to discuss Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and their impact on students, faculty, community and the college at large. The session will be held in the Technology Building, Room 201.

During this session, leaders will discuss ACEs, or Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). ACEs are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood. Toxic stress from ACEs can change brain development and affect how the body responds to stress. Having knowledge about ACEs allows faculty to understand the impact on students and how to to tailor coursework, build relationships and strengthen teaching. Faculty will also acknowledge their unique backgrounds and what they bring to the ACEs conversation through self reflection. Engagement, small group discussion and a workshop style will be applied to this conversation.

Seating is limited. Please use the form below let us know if you will be attending so that we can ensure there is enough of both. Feel free to bring your lunch.

If you have questions, you may reach out to Emily Mulvihill, CIHHI Director, at Emily.mulvihill@csupueblo.edu

We look forward to having you join us!

On behalf of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Hispanic Serving Initiatives, & Heritage Months

Dr. Gina Ann Garcia is a professor in the School of Education at UC Berkeley. NEW: Crip Spacetime: Access, Failure, and Accountability in Academic Life (Duke UP, 2024), Dr. Margaret Price

On behalf of Disability Resources

Drawing upon her open-source book Crip Spacetime: Access, Failure, and Accountability in Academic Life (Duke UP, 2024), Dr. Margaret Price argues for a turn toward collective accountability in order to make academe more accessible for all marginalized persons. Rejecting individual accommodation as a means to access, Dr. Price draws upon established work in Black Feminist Studies and disability studies to argue for the value of collectivity and gathering. Her presentation draws upon a survey and interview study conducted with more than 300 disabled faculty and staff members. She closes with a discussion of accountability and gathering in order to point the way toward more sustainable and restorative ways of moving together in academic spacetimes.

Margaret Price, PhD, is a genderqueer femme and scholar of rhetoric, disability studies, and qualitative methods. Her first book, Mad at School: Rhetorics of Mental Disability and Academic Life (University of Michigan Press, 2011), won the Outstanding Book Award from the Conference on College Composition & Communication (CCCC). Price is co-PI of the Transformative Access Project and received a 2020 Fulbright Research Award. She is an avid knitter and inline skater. Dr. Price is an Associate Professor in the Department of English and Director of the Disability Studies Program at The Ohio State University.

Sponsored by AccessADVANCE & funded by the National Science Foundation, Grant #EES-2017017 & 2017054.
