The Face of Our Habitat

There’s a strong belief that the CEO or Executive Director is “the face” of an organization. In many ways, that is very true!  When I think of A Beautiful Me, I think of Karen Palka; G.R.I.T., Greg Bischer; and Macomb Chamber, Kelley Lovati.

But the CEOs and Executive Directors, like myself, look though the mirror on the other side, and what we see are the faces of our staff, board, volunteers, and donors.

We look outward while everyone else looks inward.

At Macomb Habitat, I am not an island. If it weren’t for talented leadership, strong managers, and dedicated associates, the mission would be weak, and I would be working somewhere else.

The volunteers who build on worksites and keep our ReStores clean, they are the face of Macomb Habitat! Same with our Board of Directors and donors, whose support allows us to provide “community, homes, and hope” to low-income men and women.

The face of Habitat is a myriad of kindness, generosity, philanthropy, and joy.  It is the Board Chair and the community service worker.  It is the children of the elderly mom who had to downsize and all her belongings that came to us to be passed along to another family so the memory chain could remain unbroken.

And finally, the face of Macomb County Habitat is seen in every single mom or family who juggle multiple jobs to obtain homeownership.

Their faces.  Your faces.  Our faces. This is what I think of when I celebrate the face of Habitat!

#PowerofHome 2021 Needs You

The Power of Home – Michigan campaign is raising funds statewide to better equip Habitat for Humanity affiliates to stabilize housing in their communities.

Consumers Energy is offering affiliates $100,000 in matching funds. This means that for every $2 raised, the campaign receives an additional $1 of match money!

We need YOUR HELP to meet our $5,000 goal and receive some of these match funds!

In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis and shelter-in-place mandates, safe and healthy housing is needed more than ever. Join us and support Macomb County Habitat for Humanity as we continue to work towards a future where every Michigan family experiences firsthand the power of a healthy, safe, affordable home.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunites

Volunteering on the Horizon

We are in the process of gaining City Council permission and gathering the funds to purchase five foreclosed homes in Eastpointe for Macomb Habitat to renovate and partnering with contractors on two more. Volunteer work does not begin until Macomb Habitat owns the properties. We anticipate that Eastpointe work will start in June and more will come later in the year. We await a basement wall installation in Clinton Township and an over-the-road move of the latest home begun by Chippewa Valley students.

As soon as any projects are ready, they are posted on the Volunteer Calendar at macombhabitat.org.

So far, we have had more volunteer interest from groups and individuals this spring than we saw in all of 2020! We will have plenty for everyone to do from mid-summer to fall.

Thrivent Venture This Summer

Dates have been set for a 40 day, 100+ volunteer blitz on a home in Eastpointe. The effort is sponsored by Thrivent Financial and plans to recruit from 3-5 churches and other groups for work on many midweek and Saturdays from July 13th-August 21st.

Keep your gloves and paintbrushes ready!

Macomb Habitat was blessed with an unexpected donation in support of our work from the estate of a friend of Habitat who recently passed away. Consider updating your will to have a portion of your estate go to help Macomb Habitat reach more families in the years ahead. 2021 is our 28th year of operating in Macomb County, and with your help, we can continue that good work for many more years.
