Welcome to Lovejoy ISD where Kids Come First.

Each day we are focused on doing our Best Today. Better Tomorrow .

We are One Heart. One Lovejoy.
News from Interim Superintendent
Dr. Dennis Womack

Dear Lovejoy Community:

It has been another great week at Lovejoy. It’s hard to believe that we start the month of April next week.

House Bill 3 was considered on the House floor yesterday where it passed 149-0. The only obstacle remaining is if the bill will have the same kind of support needed to pass in the Texas Senate.

Lovejoy students have experienced a wide variety of successes over the last week. Please take time to read their accomplishments.

With respect and admiration,
Dr. Dennis Womack
LISD Interim Superintendent

Student Cell Phones in Schools
Student Cell Phones in Schools

As a reminder from last week’s Email Express, there has been a healthy discussion with varied opinions for each of the campus levels regarding student use of cell phones at school. The district’s current student cell phone use policy may be found in the Student Code of Conduct .

For safety purposes, the District permits students to possess cell phones. All cellular telephones or devices should remain turned off during instructional time. Use of cell phones is permitted before and after school, during lunch and other non-instructional periods. Students shall not use a telecommunications device, including a cellular telephone, or other electronic device in violation of district and campus rules.

Below is a timeline of actionable next steps to ensure all stakeholders have an opportunity to weigh in on this topic. Providing your feedback will allow the district to revise practices to better reflect the community which we serve.

Timeline:

Friday, March 29
A survey will be sent to Lovejoy educators regarding the existing cell phone policy, barriers to implementation, student discipline, recommendations, etc. The survey responses will be due by April 5 .

Friday, April 12
Based on the information collected from Lovejoy educators, a survey will be sent to parents of elementary, intermediate, middle and high school students regarding student use of cell phones, data plans, parental expectations for their student(s), the district’s existing policy, and recommendations. The survey responses will be due by April 19 .

Tuesday, April 30
Complete district analysis of the data collected from the parent surveys to determine misalignment with the existing policy, and consider parent recommendations for improvement.

Depending on the survey results, a parent information/feedback meeting may be scheduled on proposed changes with the goal of reaching consensus prior to the end of the school year.

July/August
The Lovejoy ISD Administration team will take the Student Code of Conduct to the Board of Trustees for review and adoption. Because 2019 is a legislative year, there will likely be several updates based on the legislative session that may require an August Board adoption.

Sophomores Win State Championship CX Title

Congratulations to sophomores Andrew Mao and Tajvir Singh on winning 1st Place at the 5A UIL State Championship for CX Debate (Cross Examination). Andrew and Tajvir secured a perfect 8-0 record. The finals round was against 5A powerhouse Lindale High School who won the championship in CX in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. In an amazing display of skill from both sides, Andrew and Tajvir won on a 2-1 decision. This is the first time Lovejoy has taken home the gold for UIL CX Debate. We are Lovejoy proud!
The Red Ledger Named Gold Crown Recipient

The Red Ledger student newspaper was one of four high school publications in the nation to receive the coveted “Gold Crown” award for digital news from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Members of the staff were on hand to accept the award in person at Saturday’s ceremony at Columbia University in New York City during the CSPA Spring National Convention.

The Gold Crown is the highest honor CSPA bestows upon a student publication and is given “in recognition of outstanding achievement in writing, editing, design and production of a superlative student publication.” Eighteen total publications were named finalists for the Crown with 14 other schools winning Silver Crowns from CSPA. The Red Ledger has previously won Silver Crowns in 2014 and 2016 and Gold Crowns in 2015 and 2017.

Powerlifter Competes at State
Brock Prengler competed in the 2019 Boys State Powerlifting meet this past weekend in Abilene. Brock was one of 23 boys from across the state that competed in the 242 pound weight class. Unfortunately, Brock suffered an injury early in the competition that would not allow him to finish the competition. We are proud of Brock for qualifying for the meet and for being one of the strongest competitors in the 242 pound class in the state meet.
Leopard Fishing Takes Back-to-Back Title

Leopard Fishing was able to come from behind in the last regular season tournament of the 2018-2019 campaign to defend its coveted Team of the Year Title against 29 high schools in the North Division. The Team of the Year honor represents team depth, talent and performance across the five tournament regular season. Better still, 13 members of the Leopard Fishing team punched their ticket to the post season Regional Championship. The top two of these teams finished inside the Top 10 Angler of The Year points race which also qualifies them for a Top 10 Showcase event later in the summer. The top 40% of finishers at the Regional Championship will move on to the State Championship in May. Congratulations to:

Circle of Partners
Lovejoy ISD is focused on generating new sources of revenue to offset our loss of state funding. Our goal is to protect our programs and avoid charging fees for items such as riding the bus. If you have a need for any of the following services, you can help generate revenue for the district by choosing members of the Circle of Partners . Our partners have pledged a charitable giveback (10% or more) to Lovejoy ISD for any business within the district.
Lovejoy ISD is pleased to announce the newest member of the Circle of Partners :

Tutoring 101 and Lovejoy ISD have formed a revenue generating/sharing partnership to bring their services to Lovejoy families. Please see below for several offerings.

Private tutoring is available for students in grades K-12 in all subjects. Tutoring 101 recommends once a week tutoring for an hour to increase grades and learn subject matter more deeply. A once a week appointment usually results in an increase of 1 letter grade or more. Turn those C's into B's.

What's your SAT/ACT score? Want a better one? What do you need it to be?
Invest in a PSAT/SAT/ACT Prep program not just a class. Tutoring 101 helps high scorers get top scores, average students raise their scores and poor test takers achieve the scores colleges want. Tutoring 101 students have earned admissions and scholarships, and have saved thousands of tuition dollars every year.

Classes are conveniently located at Lovejoy High School. Call 972.359.0222 or email Robyn@Tutoring101.com for additional information.
