A Message from the Superintendent

Dear Lovejoy Community:
I hope you and your family enjoyed Fall Break. It is nice to be experiencing some cooler temperatures. We are looking forward to welcoming a large crowd for the homecoming festivities and football game tomorrow night. Due to construction at the high school, we are 69 parking slots short of our normal count. As always, we run a shuttle from Grace Church on Estates and from Hart Elementary School. If you ride the shuttle, you will be dropped off at the gate. The shuttles run continuously throughout the night.

State Fair Winner

Sophia Foster Wins Blue and Yellow Ribbons

Congratulations to Lovejoy High School 10th grade student, Sophia Foster, on her Blue Ribbon and Yellow Ribbon finishes at the State Fair of Texas. Sophia moved from Georgia to Lucas just before beginning her 9th grade year. After visiting the 2016 State Fair of Texas, she investigated how to enter and participate in the creative arts contests.  She entered in two areas: Mixed Media with the theme of "Texans", and Watercolor with the theme of "Animals/Birds." She placed first, with a blue ribbon in Mixed Media, and received an honorable-mention yellow ribbon in Watercolor. The State Fair of Texas typically has several hundred entries from around the state in each of the various creative arts categories for both adults and junior divisions.
Sophia is currently a student of LHS Art teacher, Jeff Seidel.

A Message from the
Deputy Superintendent

Dear Lovejoy Community:
We are at the end of the first grading period. I hope your child has experienced successes and support for positive learning as a Lovejoy student. Yesterday, students in grades 9-11 took the PSAT. Following you will find additional information regarding the PSAT for each grade level.

What are the PSAT 8/9 and PSAT/NMSQT?
The PSAT test measures the skills and knowledge which students acquire in high school. The PSAT is aligned with the SAT. It measures the same skills and knowledge appropriate for different grade levels.
The PSAT 8/9 is the first test in the suite of assessments aligned with the SAT. The PSAT 8/9 is designed for students in grades 8 and 9.
Students in grades 10 and 11 take the PSAT/NMSQT. This is the official test used by the National Merit Scholarship Program, and students taking the PSAT/NMSQT are automatically screened for the National Merit Scholarship Program, an academic competition for recognition and scholarships.
One method for expanding college and university options after graduating from Lovejoy High School is to perform well on standardized exams such as the PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT. Colleges and universities typically consider performance on these tests in their admission and scholarship criteria. To assist students with the opportunities to demonstrate academic knowledge and skills on these tests, the College Board, which administers the PSAT and SAT exams, has partnered with Khan Academy to make practice materials available to all students.  To access the study materials, visit Lovejoy's PSAT, SAT, and ACT resource page .
Score Reporting
Scores for the PSAT 8/9 range from 240-1440, and the PSAT/NMSQT are 320-1520. Each section of the PSAT includes a sub-score to provide additional information for students, parents and educators. Online score reports allow students and families to quickly identify areas of strength, focus areas, and personalized study pathways for the next test the student will take.  Online score reports will be available for students in mid-December.  Lovejoy High School will receive paper reports after the Christmas break.

We hope you continue to love where you learn.  If you have feedback to help us improve, please do not hesitate to contact me on my cell at 214.385.1967.

PTA Reflections: Within Reach

The National PTA Reflections program encourages students of all ages and abilities to explore and be involved in the arts. Through the program, National PTA, Lovejoy Local and Council PTAs, and PTAs across the country urge students in preschool through grade 12 to create and submit original works. This year's contest theme is "Within Reach".  We hope all Leopards will submit an entry in one or more of the following categories: Dance Choreography, Literature, Film Production, Photography, Visual Arts, and Music Composition - reflecting on the specific theme. There is a special artist division option for students with disabilities to ensure all students have the opportunity to participate in the program. Students are recognized each year for their artistic ingenuity to bring the theme to life in a way which is personal and meaningful.  For rules and entry forms, click here .  The deadline is Friday, October 27th.

Hurricane Maria Relief
A Message from Enrique Vega

"My name is Enrique Vega. I am a Senior at Lovejoy High School and have decided to help victims affected by Hurricane Maria. On September 20th, 2017, Puerto Rico was hit by a Category 4 hurricane. This powerful hurricane has left millions without power, little access to water, dwindling food supplies, and no place to call home. I have partnered up with the Salvation Army to collect items to help relieve some of the stress put onto the US territory of Puerto Rico. Some of the most essential items needed include food, water, hygiene supplies, and baby supplies. Large donation boxes will be located at the front of Lovejoy High School from October 10th - 13th. There will also be donation boxes at all entrances to the Homecoming pep rally and the Homecoming game. Please help those affected by this tragedy by donating items. For additional information, please click here ."

Eagle Project: Hurricane Harvey Relief
A Message from Hunter Kight

"My name is Hunter Kight, I am an 8th grader at Willow Springs, and I've just started my eagle project. I have chosen to help the Hurricane Harvey victims for my project. Many of the victims did not have flood insurance, and this looks to be the most costly natural disaster in U.S. history. The clean-up and rebuild effort will take more than a year. There is a time during disasters like this that charities experience donor fatigue. This is where donations drop to their lowest. Through my project, I am trying to reduce donor fatigue by collecting basic essential items. I have partnered with the Salvation Army to collect supplies like canned goods, baby food/formula, hygiene items, diapers, and cases of water. Large donation boxes are located at each school to collect these items. I will leave these boxes out until November 3, 2017. Please consider supporting this effort by filling the boxes and helping the victims."

Lovejoy ISD Pre-Kindergarten
Space Available

Our district has offered a Pre-K program as a part of our employee daycare program for the past 11 years. On the suggestion of parents, we decided to expand that program and offer a tuition-based program open to our community. We currently have two Pre-K classrooms open at Puster Elementary. This program offers enhancements in music, fitness, art, library, science, technology, engineering, and math. We are enthusiastic about providing a Lovejoy education for community members looking for a rich learning experience which will provide a firm foundation for kindergarten and beyond.  The first week of school we received an email from a parent with a child in the program and this is what she said:
"My daughter loves her new school and runs to get dressed every morning (used to throw a fit). Her teachers are great."
If you are interested in applying, please click here .  To schedule a tour of the Pre-Kindergarten program, please contact Stacey Dillon at 469.742.8003.

College Admission and GPA/Rank Forum:
October 30

Unequivocally, our goal is to implement the best system possible which will support our students in their quest for admittance to the college/university of his/her choosing. The idea of ranking or not ranking our graduates has been a discussion item for several years. Under Texas law, we are required to rank the Top 10%, but beyond that, it is a local district decision. We have done a thorough review of this issue at least twice in the past, and have not found a compelling reason to drop the ranking policy beyond the Top 10%. Our college counselors have put together a panel of college/university admissions professionals to provide additional information for our community. Please plan to join us on October 30th from 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM in the LHS gym. Currently, we have commitments from staff at these institutions:

The University of Texas - Austin
The University of Texas - Dallas
The University of North Texas
Texas Tech University
Save the date for October 30th at 6:30 PM.
