Good Bye to Hart Elementary Principal Kathy Foster
Kathy Foster, Principal of Hart Elementary School, recently shared the news with her Hart families that she has accepted a position in Plano ISD.  We thank Kathy for her leadership and service to the students of Lovejoy ISD, and wish her the very best in her new endeavors. I have had the opportunity to collaborate with Kathy for the past twenty years - first in McKinney and now in Lovejoy. Kathy's dedication and mission have made our collaboration a positive experience for both of us. I wish her well in her new experience and know she will expose her new kids to a positive experience. You may click here to read her letter of resignation.

There are a lot of great student accomplishments to share with you this week.  I hope you will take time to read all of the successes our students have experienced both in and outside of the classroom.

A Message from the Deputy Superintendent
STEM Community Assistance Needed
Dear Lovejoy Community:
As you may recall, we have a council of teachers, administrators, and community members who participate in our Lovejoy ISD STEM Council.  This group meets each semester to identify and address areas which would enhance the educational experience of our students in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).
The Council has identified four categories of improvement efforts which we plan to address.  Our four areas for improvement are:

1.  Increase the quantity and types of internship experiences available to our students within the STEM fields.

2.  Increase the quantity and types of STEM experiences occurring during the school day, such as guest speakers and/or volunteers.

3.  Address the gender gap existing between the numbers of girls and boys choosing STEM electives in grades 7-12.

4.  Develop and implement a community event which will showcase student work and projects created in Lovejoy ISD.

In order to be most productive and effective for committees working on each of these areas, we are asking for support from the community in any of the following efforts:

1.  Please contact me if you have any student internship opportunities available within your organization or know of any student internship experiences available to Lovejoy ISD students.

2.  Please contact me if you would be available to be a guest speaker in our classrooms in order to help students become more aware of the variety of professions or types of careers available in the STEM fields.

3.  Please contact me if either #1 or #2 above is specifically designed for female students or offered by women working in STEM fields.

4.  Please contact me if you are willing to volunteer to develop or work at a STEM showcase event, or if you or your organization would be willing to help sponsor a STEM showcase event.  The STEM Council would like to offer an event similar to our annual Lovejoy ISD Fine Arts Festival with demonstrations of students' STEM work, as well as fun and interesting STEM-related activities available for all who attend.

Please click here to access the STEM Community Assistance form.
I am looking forward to hearing from you, as we continually strive to improve the STEM experiences for students in Lovejoy.
We hope you continue to love where you learn.  If you have feedback to help us improve, please do not hesitate to contact me on my cell at 214.385.1967.

Senior Project - Children's Miracle Network
Ashton Franquiz, a Junior at Lovejoy High School, will be competing in the Miss Texas Outstanding Teen pageant. She is the reigning Miss Hunt County's Outstanding Teen 2017.  Ashton is a philanthropist at heart and feels blessed to be raised in North Dallas and in the Lovejoy District. She is part of the Majestics leadership team, choir, theatre program, and NHS. She dances outside of school and finds time to give back through the National Charity League. Ashton feels "To much is given, much is required." Ashton believes we all can make a difference, even if it is 1 hour serving somewhere.  Some are called to serve and some are called to give, but by doing something, we can all make a difference.
Over the next several weeks, Ashton is raising money for the Children's Miracle Network. Would you help her in this campaign?  "Your spare change can make a change."  Containers to collect change will be located at each campus.

Sports Physicals and Cardiac Screenings:  July 22

Saturday, July 22, 2017
Willow Springs Middle School
$20 for physicals, payable to Lovejoy Athletics
$15 for cardiac screen, payable to Who We Play For
The Lovejoy Sports Medicine Department is offering sports physicals, and hosting Who We Play For for cardiac screenings. Physicals and cardiac screens are open to all 2017-18 incoming 7th - 12th grade student-athletes. A parent or guardian should attend with the student to sign permission forms.

The physical examination consists of the parent or guardian completing a medical history, followed by a thorough medical and orthopedic assessment by a host of qualified nurses, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and physicians.

Please RSVP for each student attending physicals and/or cardiac screenings by
clicking here.   Payment is due at WSMS on July 22nd. Payment must be made by check or cash, as no credit cards will be accepted.

Lovejoy ISD requires every 7th - 12th grade student-athlete to receive an annual physical prior to participation in sports.

The cardiac screen is not required for participation in athletics at Lovejoy ISD but it is highly recommended. Who We Play For recommends testing at least once during high school.

This is a fundraising event for our Sports Medicine Department.  We appreciate your support.
