 Message from the Superintendent

Dear Lovejoy Community:
The Board of Trustees met last night and reached a consensus regarding the $1.8 million in restored funding which we finally learned we will receive from the State of Texas. As a result of these funds, the district is now facing a $3.5 million shortfall instead of a $5.3 million shortfall. The Board has proposed to suspend fees for both bus riders and extracurricular activities for the 2017-2018 school year. There will be no fees for either bus or extracurricular activities for the upcoming school year. Today, I will reach out to our football season ticket holders to begin a discussion of the options to generate additional revenue for our district programs.
In September, we will reach out to you to discuss options for the balanced budget for the 2018-2019 school year. Now that we are no longer waiting for the legislature to make a decision, we can partner with you to determine the best approach for our schools for next year. The $1.8 million is coming to us in the form of a one year grant.  We already know the 2018-2019 school year grant will fall from $1.8 million to $900,000.

SchoolMessenger will be configured to send text messages to your wireless phone number(s) with your approval. Please confirm we have your accurate wireless phone number in the PowerSchool Parent Portal and then opt-in to participate by following the directions below.

In order to receive messages from Lovejoy ISD or your student's school via SMS text, we must have your wireless number(s) in SchoolMessenger and receive an "Opt-In Confirmation" from your wireless device.

A Message from the
Deputy Superintendent
Continued Excellence in Student Performance

Dear Lovejoy Community:

I hope you are enjoying the last bit of your summer break.  Teachers and administrators in Lovejoy are busily preparing for the upcoming school year. This week kicked off on Monday with our district-wide Convocation and the remainder of this week teachers are attending training sessions and finalizing important work to be sure the upcoming school year is the best ever for each student.
Yesterday, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) released the preliminary accountability ratings for districts and campuses throughout Texas.  The district and all campuses in Lovejoy continue to maintain the highest possible ranking in Texas of "Met Standard."   In addition to the State accountability ratings, Lovejoy examines the performance of our students in other areas of academics, including the Advanced Placement (AP) program from the College Board.
As you know, AP tests are scored from 1 to 5.  A score of 3 is considered passing by the College Board, and many colleges and universities grant credit for a score of 3, 4, or 5.  Although a score of 2 is not considered passing, research indicates that students who take an AP course and score at least a 2 on an AP exam are more likely to earn a higher GPA in college and more likely to graduate at a higher rate and at a quicker pace than their peers, even if those peers earned college credit by taking dual credit courses in high school.  It is for this research-based reason that Lovejoy encourages all students to take at least one AP course while in high school in order to experience the rigors the vast majority of our students will encounter when they enroll in college.
The College Board attempts to identify stellar academic performance by designating students as AP Scholars for successful completion of AP courses while in high school.  At a minimum, a student must take and pass at least 3 AP exams while in high school to be designated an AP Scholar. The second highest level of AP Scholar with Honors is granted to students who take and pass 4 AP exams with an average score of 3.25.  A higher level still is AP Scholar with Distinction, and this is granted to students who take and pass 5 AP exams with an average score of 3.5. The highest level of performance identifies students as National AP Scholars when a student has taken and passed at least 8 AP exams with an average score of 4.0. I am pleased to inform you that Lovejoy ISD has been informed that we have 271 AP Scholars, 21 of whom are National AP Scholars.  This is an increase from 254 AP Scholars in 2016. Also worth celebrating is that 70.8% of our students earned a 3 or better on their AP test. This is an increase of 5% from 2016.

We hope you continue to love where you learn.  If you have feedback to help us improve, please do not hesitate to contact me on my cell at 214.385.1967.
