Don't let insurance companies take you for a ride
PHILIPSBURG - Don't let your insurance company take you for a ride. That is, in popular terms, the message from attorney Cor Merx, founder of the local Consumer Association. "I am not going to name any insurance companies," Merx says in his...

Dear Reader
Yesterday, we posed the question in the intro of our newsletter if it is government's responsibility to fix roofs and rebuild homes of people. To continue that discussion, the problem we have with this contention is that if it does happen - and apparently it is happening as government vows to fix 300-350 roofs by Christmas - can this be considered a form of vote-buying?
It is a worthy cause government is fighting for, but the sudden availability of funds to the tune of 5 million guilders for this project makes us wonder why government can't find the same amounts of money for other worthy causes such as saving USM, the University of St. Martin, or for instance - just a random thought of the top of mind - the marketing and promotion of St. Maarten as a tourism destination.
We don't want to beat a dead horse by rehashing the whole sordid affair surrounding the St. Maarten Tourism Authority aka the STA, but the fact remains that it is election time and the flurry of appointments, handouts and the magical appearances of funds from all sorts of hidden accounts we didn't know existed in government's treasury department, gives us an indiscernible taste in our mouth that we can't quite distinguish whether it is a good thing or bad thing.
As the
new STA board consists for the most part of government affiliated persons or civil servants, it is imperative that appointments from the private sector to the supervisory board be equally executed expeditiously before this becomes yet another body that dies a slow death like many other government entities set up with good intentions to be independent for worthy causes but with no adequate funding to back them up or make them sustainable. Remember EDC, anyone?
We are presently busy with two investigative reports. One on the situation surrounding insurance settlements and one regarding the St. Maarten post office (
PSS). Be sure to read our
interview with Cor Merx as his message to not let insurance companies take us for a ride will resonate with many of us in the community where it pertains to getting a just settlement for damages claimed.
