Dear Reader

A visibly shaken and emotional Ernest Roumou (85), also known as "Sugarboy", received a delegation from the St. Maarten Development Fund (SMDF), represented by SMDF Director Keith Franca, Robert-Jan De Wilde (Deputy Dutch Representative for the Netherlands in Philipsburg; as co-financer), SMDF Board Chairwoman RIchelda Emmanuel, and contractor for the St. Peters community, Roland Arrindell, at his newly rebuilt home in St. Peters yesterday.

The emotional Ernest Roumou returned Monday, August 13th, to his new concrete home which is also fortified against hurricanes of the magnitude of Irma and Maria. He was clearly happy to be back home after months of living in shelters around the island.

We believe more community-minded initiatives of this nature should be implemented across the board on St. Maarten in every neighbourhood and we believe the Community Councils should play an active role in this process.

We commend the St. Maarten Development Fund (SMDF) for this great initiative to assist the senior citizens in our communities with the fixing up of their homes. will be publishing an in-depth report on this project funded by SMDF and the Dutch government through the remaining AMFO funds and the recovery funds.

In the meantime, feel free to view the photos taken of this occasion yesterday via the following Facebook link:

Best regards,

The Publisher
