Dear Reader
Minister Emil Lee was almost caught with his pants down yesterday when smnnews.com published a blogpost about him illegally using MR-4 plates on his personal pickup truck and using gasbonds to purchase fuel for his hotel property.
Minister Lee had a very busy day yesterday. He also had to respond to statements made by Eileen Healy, director of the Mental Health Foundation (MHF) about the MHF's dealings with the healthcare system and SZV in the aftermath of hurricane Irma in regards to patients needing care.
With the extremely sad
news coming out of Aruba about the
death of a 5-year child severely beaten and abused, the need for mental health care in a country is extremely important. The greatest responsibility of a government must be for the care and well-being of all its citizens, young and old. It is a responsibility anchored in our country's constitution.
Less profound, but still saddening is the news of the passing of Tom Westermeyer on Friday, November 24, 2017. Tom Westermeyer at the age of 79 passed away after a short illness. He leaves to mourn his wife, Jannie, and three sons. He came to St. Maarten in the late 1970's and fell in love with the Island. So much so that he made use of his developers ability and purchased a large piece of property immediately next to the present Divi Little Bay Beach Resort. His plan was to build a multi-million dollar complex unique to the Caribbean. Unfortunately, only two phases of the five-stages plan were realized, namely the now Belair Beach Resort and the Belair Hillside 100 Home Development project. At the time, the late Max Pandt was the Lt. Governor, and the first cornerstone was placed on September 7th, 1979, right after hurricanes David and Frederic.
