Dear Reader
When an email hit our newsdesk announcing that Genève Phillip-Durham is no longer employed with or affiliated with the University of St. Martin as the Dean of Academics as of October 31st, 2017, our initial reaction was "Genève who?!?".
Her
letter of resignation proved to be an interesting read. She openly admits that she was appointed in spite of her “lack of experience” as it relates to management of an institution of higher learning.
Then we were reminded that National Alliance (NA) Member of Parliament Christophe Emmanuel had fired off a number of questions to the University of St. Martin (USM) board last year June 2016 about the appointment of a Trinidadian national to the post of Dean of Academics.
As this was before our time as StMaartenNews.com, we post a link to The Daily Herald's report on this
here. For the rest, we won't bother comment on this situation. Everyone is free to draw their own conclusions. But a silent and well-hidden dean was obviously not what the USM had deserved.
On the
news that Point Blanche prison inmates have been transported off-island, it is important to note that 59 prisoners relocated to Curacao and The Netherlands doesn't mean that there is now space at the Point Blanche prison for 59 new prisoners. No. The freed up prison cell blocks will be repaired and reconstructed and when these cell blocks are ready, the prisoners will be returned back to Point Blanche. Looters will be housed in the Simpson Bay detention center.
Parliament is holding an urgent meeting this afternoon. The Minister of Finance has been requested to give a presentation about the country's financial position. The question is if there is budget for the elections slated for Monday, January 8th. That should be another interesting meeting.
