Dear Reader

According to Caribisch Network, airlines are now planning to come back and are adding more flights to St. Maarten. For example, American Airlines started daily flights from Charlotte from November 4 and Philadelphia and New York will be easily accessible from December 19.

Tourism remains the most important source of income for St. Maarten. The fact that more flights to St. Maarten are coming is important for the recovery and economic development of the island. In addition to the airport, the (yacht) ports are also important for bringing tourists to the island. On 14 and 28 November, passengers of six cruise ships will dock in these ports for the first time since Irma.

Of course, we look forward to more ships in port this winter season.

In the meantime, please read our full newsletter that we hope will be both newsworthy and informative to you with news over the past weekend.

Happy readings!

Soft Opening Ground Floor Airport Terminal Building December 15, 2018

PHILIPSBURG - The original goal was to open in November, but that date has been moved. Now the reopening of the renewed airport Princess Juliana International Airport on Sint-Maarten is scheduled for mid-December 2018. The airport that was destroyed and could no longer be used due to hurricane Irma in September 2017, will not fully open.

"In December, we will only open the ground floor, where we will temporarily place the departure and arrival halls. In a later stage, the first floor will also open and the departures will take place there. The entire airport will be completed around 2020," says Audrey St. Luce-Jack, corporate communications specialist at the airport.

The large pavilion tents that were temporarily put up in February 2018 so that flights to and from St. Maarten could just take place, are removed after the reopening. Currently, Commodore N.V., the construction company that was assigned the reconstruction contract, is working on phase one, which is called Package One-Temporary Operations. This includes the creation of temporary check-in counters, immigration and emigration space, offices, security, CCTV, baggage belts, IT systems, restaurants, all on the ground floor.

Ballast Nedam is responsible for repairs to the roof. It is expected that the roof of the airport will be ready and hurricane-resistant by January 2019 at the latest.
