Dear Reader
Is it government's responsibility to fix roofs and rebuild homes of people?
According to a Facebook poster it is not. We tend to agree. Of course, government should try and assist certain people such as pensioners and senior citizens who cannot afford proper insurance. However, we also think it is government's responsibility to make sure insurance companies give especially senior citizens a break when it comes to their insurance premiums.
As more and more natural disasters occur, the question arise who will be ultimately responsible for damages and the rebuilding process. Another blow to the island like Irma will have catastrophic financial consequences for banks and insurance companies. Then we will all turn to government seeking assistance. What is government to do then? What
can a government do in such cases?
These are the questions on our minds as we read certain posts on Facebook. Facebook is a good pulse to gauge what is on the minds of the people of St. Maarten. Not for nothing, Facebook asks you what is on your mind. Very enlightening and thought-provoking sometimes to read what people are thinking.
Tomorrow, we intend to bring you an in-depth analysis of the situation with the post office (aka Postal Services St. Maarten) and government's role in this whole affair. Whose responsibility is it to ensure adequate postal services in a country? Interestingly, the answer to this question can also have consequences for banks and insurance companies as well. Stay tuned...
The automotive industry has lost a long time salesrep in the person of
Beverly Morris of Motorworld fame as many took to Facebook to express their profound sadness and loss as news of her passing spread through social media like wildfire yesterday.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.

Finally, the 1st Annual Customer Service Week is from November 27th to December 1st at the Holland House Beach Hotel and there is still room for more participants, though space is limited. Last-minute walk-ins paying cash at the door will also be accepted. Their Job Readiness Course will be a hit, we believe, with many jobless post-Irma. Check online at
www.AcademyCSMA.com for more information about the available courses and their Irma special rates. Sessions are from 9am to 5pm each day.

Teachers receive a more than decent salary in St. Maarten. Figures presented by Minister Jacobs (Education) during the handling of the 2017 draft budget in December of last year show that the average annual salary for a public school teacher is $52,730, or $4,394 per month.
After Hurricane Irma, we did not hear anything about applying the no-work-no pay rule to teachers so we may safely assume that their salaries arrived as usual at the end of September and October.
Now Minister Jacobs has given these teachers a token of appreciation: a voucher worth around $112 for shopping.
