Can you still cash checks in St. Maarten?

Dear Reader

We sent a series of questions via email to the Central Bank of Curacao and St. Maarten asking about the local banks' new practice of refusing to cash checks.

Apparently, this is a trend not only in St. Maarten but also in other Caribbean countries. Reference is being made to the situation in Aruba where checks are being done away all together. Now we read an open letter to the banking association in Saint Lucia about the same problem on that island.

Are these the first steps to a cashless society?

So do we then don't need to Dollarize? But instead Digitize?

We read in a press release issued by the Central Bank that - and I quote - “The people of Curaçao and Sint Maarten will get to know a 'State of the Art' central bank with a customer-friendly and innovative image”.

Let's see how fast they will answer queries from the press then in light of their new customer-friendly image.

Best regards,

Terrance Rey
