Part 1 - What is demolition?

According to the United States Department of Labor (USDL), Demolition is the dismantling, razing, destroying or wrecking of any building or structure or any part thereof.”

As expected, there are many hazards associated with demolitions but according to the USDL “demolition involves additional hazards due to unknown factors which makes demolition work particularly dangerous”.

To emphasize the magnitude of demolition task, the USDL explained that “It is not enough to provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Employees must be trained on the selection, use, fitting and inspections of the building they intend to demolish. They advised that specific standards must be in place to avoid hazards.
