Dear Reader
We often hear the cry that young people can't get jobs nor assistance to start their own business, buy a home or even obtain a piece of land to work or build on.
No matter how interesting the data coming out of the STAT's business
survey is, there can be more economic activities if the young people can get more chances to start their own business via micro-funding, adequate support and start up advice and - most importantly - with significant tax breaks and minimization of red tape and bureaucracy.
Despite the existence and work of the micro-financing agency Qredits, one of the biggest complaints remain the lack of available funding for young entrepreneurs. Another issue is the astronomical rental prices of commercial units on the island. We have our own theories as to why rents are so high. A topic for an article on another day.
Nevertheless, armed with the data from the
economic census survey, government would do well to investigate the opportunities offered to the youths to start their own businesses with an eye towards their future as the providers of jobs and as the motor in our future economy.
In the meantime, please read our full newsletter that we hope will be both newsworthy and informative to you with news from Monday and Tuesday.
Happy readings!

Soft Opening Ground Floor Airport Terminal Building December 15, 2018
PHILIPSBURG - The original goal was to open in November, but that date has been moved. Now the reopening of the renewed airport Princess Juliana International Airport on Sint-Maarten is scheduled for mid-December 2018. The airport that was destroyed and could no longer be used due to hurricane Irma in September 2017, will not fully open.
"In December, we will only open the ground floor, where we will temporarily place the departure and arrival halls. In a later stage, the first floor will also open and the departures will take place there. The entire airport will be completed around 2020," says Audrey St. Luce-Jack, corporate communications specialist at the airport.
The large pavilion tents that were temporarily put up in February 2018 so that flights to and from St. Maarten could just take place, are removed after the reopening. Currently, Commodore N.V., the construction company that was assigned the reconstruction contract, is working on phase one, which is called Package One-Temporary Operations. This includes the creation of temporary check-in counters, immigration and emigration space, offices, security, CCTV, baggage belts, IT systems, restaurants, all on the ground floor.
Ballast Nedam is responsible for repairs to the roof. It is expected that the roof of the airport will be ready and hurricane-resistant by January 2019 at the latest.
