Dutch Marine admits: 'We underestimated Hurricane Irma'

Almost one year after Hurricane Irma, the Dutch Royal Navy admits that they had underestimated the natural disaster on Sint Maarten. Too little attention was paid to the impact of the hurricane on public order and safety, resulting in looting.

That is what Caribbean Commander of the Navy, Peter de Vin said in an interview with the personnel magazine Alle Hens. The statement is remarkable because the Commander of the Dutch Navy Rob Kramer last year publicly contradicted statements made by then Prime Minister Marlin of Sint Maarten.

According to Marlin, the Dutch marines had not done anything about the looting. Utter nonsense, Rob Kramer said at that time: "My people have acted from the first moment within the limits of their possibilities"

Brigadier General De Vin now also puts a hand in his own bosom. According to him, the Navy did not sufficiently realize that especially the government and the security services were also victims of the disaster. Pro-active action was therefore especially difficult for the first 48 hours with the looting as a result. "At the request of the local authorities, our priority was to provide assistance and map the scope of damages. This should have been, with hindisght, the maintenance of public order and safety," says De Vin.

Especially shopkeepers in the heart of Philipsburg had to pay dearly the first days. Most shop windows had survived the natural violence well, but no barricade could be found against the looting public.
