Dear Reader

We would like to thank Minister Lee for acknowledging the absence of Hilbert Haar yesterday during the Council of Ministers' press briefing. We also commend the minister for recognizing the contributions of Hilbert Haar to journalism in St. Maarten in terms of his journalistic integrity and qualities. Despite his absence, StMaartenNews.com was present in spirit at the COM briefing via the internet and we have the following comments about things that made us go "Hmmmm".

  • Government wants to entertain the idea to float a bond to raise funds on short notice. This despite the possibilities to get funds released from the World Bank if government would only do the necessary paperwork.
  • Cost-cutting measures partially on a voluntary basis. When has requesting to give up anything on a voluntary basis ever worked in St. Maarten? We are still waiting on parliamentarians to cut their royal salaries.
  • BTP collects concession and spectrum fees on behalf of government but does not transfer these to government coffers. Who are the boss of these entities that are sitting comfortably and richly on the taxpayers monies with impunity?

We quote the minister of Finance, Mike Ferrier, on the following: "Bad management should not be rewarded. Incompetence should not be ignored and breaking the law should be investigated and punished."

We agree with the outgoing minister on this point completely.

So we leave him with also with some unpaid advice from Hilbert Haar, who was generous enough to provide us with one more opinion piece entitled " Unpaid Advice to Incoming Government". You can read it now by becoming a patreon of StMaartenNews.com. Or you can wait until next week to read it during the big day for StMaartenNews.com. What that big day is, you will soon find out. Stay tuned. In the meantime, click here to access and unlock this opinion piece on our Patreon page.

Do enjoy reading our newsletter. With your support we will be broadening your reading options soon by bringing back a previous platform. What that previous platform is? We will give you enough time to guess the coming days.
