Dear Reader
In April we first reported that the Public Prosecutor's Office was looking at the situation at the dump.
The disastrous situation at the landfill and the persistent fires had drawn the attention of the Prosecutor's Office.
Now with over 22,163 people who watched last night's blaze on social media via the police force's Facebook post with drone video footage of the dump fire, the Prosecutor's Office has issued a public statement in response to the many concerns noted.
It is unavoidable to not consider the situation at the dump criminal. The health of residents in the community and the effect on the environment are paramount. Obviously, the situation is unacceptable. Hence the call yesterday for all stakeholders to come together and find a workable solution once and for all.
If voluntarily heeding this call is not sufficient to instigate action, maybe the scrutiny of the Public Prosecutor's Office and the intention to enforce criminal law by prosecuting relevant parties will be just the incentive government needs to bring the solution-seeking process to a resolution.
We really hope indeed that this approach does influence the change that is urgently needed.
We will gladly report on any positive developments in this area.
We look forward to hearing more about the "sustainable solution to this ongoing problem" that government continues to work on as the Prime Minister mentioned in her press briefing about the dump fire on Wednesday morning.
In the meantime, we will continue to hold our collective breath. For how long that will be possible, we do not know.
Kind regards,
Terrance Rey
