The Governor is bound to uphold the Constitution
Dear Editor, On November 3rd 2017, His Excellency Governor Eugene Holiday signed the national decree declaring that early elections would take place on January 8th, 2018. This was a very rash decision, seeing that the decree was signed within 24...

Dear Reader
We open today's edition of our newsletter with the
article of Wycliffe Smith as he gives a good overview of the position of Governor in the present 'political crisis' we have here in St. Maarten.
As the dust settle and we basically have a stalemate situation between the new majority of 8 and the caretaker Marlin-cabinet instead of a Mexican standoff, thanks to the rapid fire action of the Governor to sign the decree for new elections, we wonder when our leaders in their positions of powers are going to use their authority to do the right thing on behalf of the people of St. Maarten.
As the rain poured down during last night's thunderstorm, we issue a sigh for all the people whose homes will be flooded again. Everyone in position of authority seems to be using rules and regulations to justify their decisions, much like the insurance companies are using the fine print to justify not paying out their clients their just amounts for the damages to their properties and assets.
The system is not set up to help the small guy - or gall - because if it was, we would not be wasting time debating the constitution, the laws, the rules, regulations, rights and arguing the fine print of the decisions made or those that are still to be taken. We should just do the right thing. But once again, doing the right thing does not seem to be primary concern of many of those in positions of power. And it has everything to do with not being to operate from a place of integrity, responsibility and a genuine care for the people in our society.
Our
GoFundMe report about people helping the employees of Divi Little Bay Beach Resort shows that ultimately only the people can help the people. Not the banks, not the insurance companies and certainly not the government, Only a community of shared or kindred spirits can help each other. So we definitely would advise the people of St. Maarten to continue to help each other, because that is the only way we will move forward and achieve a better society as St. Maarteners post-Irma, with or without reconstruction aid.

The news coming out of Curacao is that this year will see the end of two newspapers, La Prensa and Ultimo Noticia as both newspapers are going through some difficult financial times. The chief editor of La Prensa blames the uncontrolled social media for this demise. Rather than blame social media, newspapers are to embrace this new medium and make it their aim to broadcast the news faster than social media using social media. The technology is there.

All French bakeries are gone from Marigot’s waterfront
MARIGOT – The waterfront boulevard in Marigot is not what it used to be anymore after Hurricane Irma hit the place. Now it appears that two of the main attractions on this stretch – the French bakeries Sarafina and Le Divin – will not be rebuilt.
Le Divin has been completely obliterated by the monster hurricane and the debris is still exactly where it landed on September 6. Attempts to locate its owner, and to make arrangements for a cleanup, reportedly have failed so far.
It seems likely that the owner has simply left the island.
A bit further down on the Boulevard de France, French bakery Sarafina has also been wiped out. We did not manage to get a hold of its owner, but we heard that the damages to the property add up to €1.5 million ($1.74 million at the current rate of exchange), that the insurance claim has been paid out and that the establishment will not be rebuilt.
The only difference between Le Divin and its close neighbor Sarafina is that the latter place has been neatly cleaned up. The house above the bakery has been destroyed and the Mini Cooper its owner drove stands forlorn and heavily damaged at a spot where once locals and tourists alike queued for fresh croissants and other French delicacies.
With the disappearance of Le Divin and Sarafina, the waterfront is suddenly without French bakeries. Earlier a third outlet, La Sucrière already closed its doors. Its former location, near the also destroyed Claude’s Mini Club, is now home to Maison de la Presse.
