Dear Reader

Bear with me for a few and I will give you the link to the unlocked version of the headline editorial piece titled " Incoming MPs must take case to court" for those who have not read it yet.

The problem we have in St. Maarten is that everyone likes to follow the letter of the law in certain situations when it is beneficial to their agenda, but no one is following the spirit of the law.

It is a mystery why Parliament did not let Emil Lee resign first and the remaining 7 coalition members vote in Tamara Leonard as his replacement and then allow Wycliffe Smith to resign as MP while the other 7 coalition members vote in Claude Peterson as the new MP. A process that could have avoided the present embarrassing situation.

So far the results of our pole (see below in this newsletter) all indicate that this situation is a sign of ‘ political immaturity’ according to our readers.

A recent study revealed that when people in a position of power were asked to think about how they should act, they acted more ethically than when they were asked how people in position of power should act. A subtle difference in questions with extreme different results in behavior. Therefore, making people in power think about how they should behave may serve as a potential form of preventative medicine against the abuse of power was the conclusion of that study.

So let’s remind our members of Parliament that they are elected to serve and it is their duty to represent the people who elected them to the fullest of their capabilities. That also means allowing their elected colleagues to be admitted into Parliament when they have duly been selected and vetted to serve their country as well.

Let's see what will happen today as Parliament attempts to hold it's third meeting with this agenda point. A meeting that does not require a quorom. However, they still need a simple majority of half+1=7 elected members to vote to admit the new incoming members of Parliament as a 'proces verbaal' has to be made up based on this decision and sent to the Main Voting Bureau and to the Governor's cabinet in order for these new members to be sworn in by the Governor.

In the meantime, you can read the unlocked article about this situation online by clicking on this link...
