Welcome to February Council Connect

President's Message by Judy Weston

As president, I felt it was important to spend time reaching out to the women and priest of our diocese. Through those connections, I've really come to appreciate the beauty of our women and also to better understand the concerns within our councils.

I've traveled every month throughout the diocese, with the exception of Nov. 2024 and Dec. 2025. One of the best parts of all that travel has been meeting so many wonderful women. And I'll add--my husband didn't panic when I finally tallied up the mileage, so that's a win.

Enthusiasm truly is contagious. The Holy Spirit is clearly at work across our diocese. We are seeing young women step into leadership roles, and through prayer and invitation, many have said yes to taking on new responsibilities. It has been inspiring to witness.

As the date of the first anniversary of my mother’s death approaches, I’m reminded of the love my mother gave to our family not only when we were young, but as she got older and lived in the Assisted Living. Mom was the best listener. She didn’t have to say much. I could tell from her expressions whether she agreed with what I said or questioned what I said. Regardless, she always listened intently. Even if she didn’t totally agree, she always had my back. As I age, I realize that most people just want someone to listen to them. We also want to be appreciated. I had many older adults in my life that showed love by listening and giving simple praise.

The actions of your good works are evidence of a heart that’s alive with Christ.

The budgeted donations to pregnancy centers across the Diocese will be made following the Winter Symposium in the amounts of:

Birthright, Lincoln $208.33 Wellspring, Hastings $208.33 Willow Center, Beatrice $208.33 Hope, Superior $125.00

ABC, McCook $ 83.34

Thanks to your donations additional gifts were made through the Apostles for Life project:

Birthright, Lincoln $347 Wellspring, Hastings $347

Willow Center, Beatrice $347 Hope, Superior $208.20

ABC, McCook $138.80

And many of your PCCW/Altar Societies donated additional funds, supplies or resources, some through Baby Bundle in a Box, to these or other local pregnancy centers. THANK YOU for your generosity!

Remember as St. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12:27 “Now you are the Body of Christ, and individually members of it.” We are called to go to church, but even more, we are called to BE the church. Be Christ’s heart and hands as we continue to serve others with presence, support, and prayers. And through that, we will be blessed with caring guidance and the peace of Christ.

Pope Leo declared 2026 “The Year of Grace”. First of all, what is Grace? According to the Baltimore Catechism, “Grace is a supernatural gift from God, given through Jesus Christ’s merits, for our salvation, making us holy and children of God”. Or, more simply put, as according to the Lincoln Diocese’s 92 Questions, “God’s life in us”.

There are two types of grace, Sanctifying and Actual. Sanctifying Grace “makes the soul holy, fills it with God’s life, and gives us the right to heaven”. (Baltimore Catechism) Actual Grace “is a passing, supernatural help that enlightens the mind and moves the will to do good and avoid evil”. (Baltimore Catechism) Using both types of grace together can allow us to respond more fully to God and His will for us.

Jesus wants to give us graces; He actually longs for it. Mary wants to help us too. On the Miraculous Medal that Mary showed to St. Catherine Laboure, Mary has rays extending from her fingers down to earth to us. These rays represent the graces given to us from Jesus her Son. Call on Mary to help you this year, to help you attain all that Jesus has in store for you. You will not be disappointed.

DRAW A SAINT

It's a great idea to ask the intercession from the saints. Maybe a special saint to accompany you through 2026! We had the opportunity to choose a saint--or allow the saint to choose you--through a drawing at the LDCCW Full Board Winter Meeting. You may "draw a saint" by visiting the website:
