An Exploration of Latinidad and Cultural Belonging | |
|
Diasporicans: An Exploration of Latinidad and Cultural Belonging is a Thesis Project workshop series calling all 1st-3rd generation immigrants to be in a community, celebrating cultural roots and examining the question: What does it mean to claim, hold ownership, and represent a culture/ country which you are physically disconnected from, may have never visited, may not speak the same language, but are ethnically tied to? Have you had feelings of not belonging in your community? Do you feel like your intersectionalities complicate your sense of belonging? During this series, we will explore what “belonging and being enough” means to participants and reframe the infamous “Where are you really from” question, as people of the Latin-Caribbean diaspora who are affected daily by assimilation, colonization, white supremacy, and immigration.

SubTerra is an underground production and recording studio in the basement of the Loisaida, Inc. Center, and they host cultural events and workshops in and around the Loisaida community. The staff at SubTerra are H. (Horatio) and Cwis, who work to nurture future talents by providing them with space and equipment, such as drums and keyboards, as well as music lessons, jam sessions, equipment rental, and internship opportunities. (SubTerra is currently seeking interns).
For internship opportunities, please fill out this form.
Although the focus of SubTerra began with Hip Hop, they now approach a wide range of musical genres and styles, including folk and pop. The people at SubTerra seek to celebrate local artists and have cultural exchanges through a mostly organic and unplanned approach.
