Embracing Radical Hospitality!
The Rev. Carol Thomas Cissel, Guest Minister, preaching
Theologian Kortright Davis explains that true hospitality requires us to move beyond our boundaries and to extend the spirit of welcome to the stranger, to those easily seen as ?Others?. But do we want to step away from the ease and comfort of congregational homogeneity? If so, how do we set The Welcome Table for all to be fed? Come join us to listen, share and learn.

Joining Rev. Cissel on the chancel will be Worship Associate Ben Bear.

Ministering in music will be Mark Johnson, piano and special musical guest
Laura Inserra, multi-instrumentalist.
Sunday, July 5, 12:30 PM, Murdock Room

Still Life with Water Colors
Water color still life inspired by Paul Cezanne's "Still Life with Bottle and Apple Basket". We will be using summer fruit like watermelons and berries maybe even some sunflowers to create our own summer still life painting.
Adopt A Planter
Join  the 24 UUs who have adopted or continue to adopt a courtyard planter or area. Weed, trim, feed and even add new plants in your 2015-16 adopted planter. You can tend it at your convenience, and there are tools and supplies available in the courtyard the second Sunday of the month before and after services during the mini-clean up. Usually there are other adopters tending their planter on the Second Sunday. It's easy, fun, and makes our courtyard look great. There are two planters available for adoption at this time. Contact Joan Rost for information today!
Sunday, July 5, 6PM, Fireside Room
English: Hegemony or Opportunity?
Worldwide, the number of non-native speakers of English is three to four times greater than the number of native speakers. Just in China, there are more English learners than there are English speakers in the U.S. Some view English as the key to educational and economic opportunity for the world?s poor and oppressed, while others see the spread of English as a neo-imperialist project. Where does the impetus to adopt English come from? And what are the consequences? A discussion of these topics will be facilitated by Linda-Marie Koza, who trains teachers of English in locations ranging from the Dominican Republic to South Korea.

The potluck starts at 6PM and the discussion at 6:30.

Bring something to share if you are able.  Everyone is welcome.

Plight of Refugees Featured in SF Weekly and Housing Need
SF Weekly spotlighted the plight and feelings of Junior Mayema in a story on sexual minority refugees last Thursday. Junior is a 27-year-old gender non-conforming refugee from the Congo whom the Guardian Group has been helping since last November.

The story includes a link to a 5-minute video documentary which features Junior and his situation. The article and video reveal the problems that people who have had to flee their home countries have adapting to and surviving in this welcoming, confusing, and expensive city. Junior is doing well in dealing with his situation. He has housing until September, is working part-time at AT&T Park when the Giants are home, and is looking for additional employment.

The Guardian Group does have an immediate need for housing for another one of its clients. The people who have allowed the 31-year-old gay man from Tunisia to house sit while they were on vacation are returning on the Fourth of July. The Guardian Group has no housing options available at this time. They  are looking for a room with shared kitchen and bathing facilities, preferably in San Francisco.

If you can help with this critical housing need or would like more information about the young man in need, please contact Janet Hewins (415-239-6735) or Galen Workman at 415-647-8830.  For more information about the group and their work, visit their website here .
We Salute Julia and Sam Thoron!
Julia and Sam were selected by the 2015 Pride board to receive the Jose Julio Sarria History Maker Award. Julia and Sam are straight allies who have worked for gay rights for more than 25 years.
They became involved with PFLAG after their daughter, Liz, came out to them in January 1990. By February, they had connected with PFLAG's San Francisco chapter. "When Liz came out, she had not changed," Sam said. "We needed some education and support around this new information." They soon realized that support ran both ways. "We wanted to educate the public and advocate for full equality for our child," Julia said. Julia and Sam became leaders of the San Francisco chapter of PFLAG.  Sam chaired PFLAG's national board, and was a member of Freedom to Marry's national board (with our own Rev. Buehrens).  In 2008, the Thorons were featured  in a commercial opposing Proposition 8.

Our theme for the month of July is ? Interdependence.?
In preparation for the Bicentennial of American Independence, Henry Steele Commager that good Unitarian historian, prepared a document called
?A Declaration of Interdependence? that was presented to the World Affairs Council and endorsed by several agencies of the United Nations.
It's in Print!
