EI SEAL TURTLE PATROL: Seals "Hauling Out"
Submitted by Valerie Rohrig

The week of January 13-18, we had an unusual happening in Emerald Isle. Juvenile Harbor Seals decided we were the place to be!  Over a six-day period, we had 7 seals "haul out" (the term used for coming onto the sand) and rest on our beach.  While seals coming onto the sand to rest along our coastline is not unusual, choosing EI certainly is unusual.
All the seals were in the process of migrating. They came ashore, not because they were injured or ill, but because they needed to rest and sleep. In conjunction with the NC Wildlife Marine Mammal stranding project, our Sea Turtle Patrol team quickly went to work each time to set up perimeters to protect the seals from human interference and beach traffic. Our hope was to allow these creatures to sleep undisturbed. Startled seals will "flush" (quickly rush back into the water) if they feel threatened.
For protection, the seal's coloring lends itself to blending into surroundings. In this case, from a distance, seals resting on the beach could be confused as a harmless pile of sand.  Even when pointed out to visitors, some of the seals were hard to see.

If you spot a seal on the beach, please don't approach it or make loud noises. Quietly observe it from afar and quickly report them to Dale Baquer at 252-646-8292.

Phase III Beach Nourishment - underway through April 2021

Phase III of the post-Florence beach nourishment program is underway and scheduled to last through April 2021.

The nearly $32 million contract will be completed by the Great Lakes Dredge & Dock (GLDD) company, the same company that performed Phase I and Phase II of the nourishment along the Bogue Banks.  The project is funded in part by FEMA, the State of North Carolina, and Carteret County Beach Nourishment Reserves.

Phase III will deliver an estimated 2,012,850 cubic yards of sand along 9.4 miles of Emerald Isle - the equivalent of roughly 168,000 dump trucks! For more detailed information, click here

Please reference the map above.  Segments marked in YELLOW identify the Phase III areas scheduled to be nourished in the coming months.

Improvements to Emerald Isle Bridge Underway

Improvements and repairs to a Carteret County bridge are underway and expected to last for several months.

In January, N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews started closing one of two lanes of the bridge to Emerald Isle. Contractors are using flaggers at the ends of the work zone to direct traffic.

Weekend closures can be expected between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., while weekday closures can be expected between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The lane closure will allow contractors to continue rehab work, which extends the life of the bridge. Drivers should expect a lane closure to last through March 2021.

Motorists should use caution while crews are working and allow themselves more time than normal to reach their destinations.
