Emergency operation updates for Hurricane Ian

Evacuations

Sarasota County is calling for the evacuation of Level A and B. This includes vessels, RVs, mobile and manufactured homes. Learn your level here.

The Siesta and John Ringling Causeway bridges are now closed and entry to the islands is restricted.

Here are some tips if you're sheltering in place.

Government Operations

  • Sarasota County Government: All offices closed Tuesday, Sept. 27, and Wednesday, Sept. 28.
  • The Sept. 27 regular Sarasota County Commission meeting is cancelled.
  • The final public budget hearing is being rescheduled to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 3.
  • Clerk of the Circuit Court and County Comptroller: Closed Tuesday, Sept. 27, and Wednesday, Sept. 28. Customers can access services online 24/7 at www.SarasotaClerk.com.
  • City of Sarasota: The city closed at noon Tuesday, Sept. 27. Water to the barrier islands was shut off at 7 p.m. to protect distribution system and resources.
  • City of North Port: The city will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 28 and Thursday, Sept. 29. All parks and recreation facilities are closed until further notice. 
  • Town of Longboat: The town's meetings scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 27, have been postponed until Oct. 3, at 5:01 p.m. The evacuation of barrier islands including Longboat Key is to be completed by 8 p.m. Tuesday.
  • City of Venice: Venice City Hall closed at noon to the public. City Hall will also be closed Wednesday, Sept. 28. 
  • Tax Collector: Closed Wednesday, Sept. 28 and Thursday, Sept. 29. Many transactions can be completed onli Visit www.SarasotaTaxCollector.com or www.facebook.com/SarasotaTaxCollector for more info.

Water Service - Siesta Key and Casey Key

In anticipation of potential impacts from Hurricane Ian, on Tuesday, Sept. 27, Sarasota County Utilities shut off water service to residents and businesses located on Siesta Key and Casey Key. After water service ends, county utilities customers will not have water for use until after the storm. Residents and businesses are encouraged to please plan accordingly.

Residential Trash and Recycling Pick-up

Sarasota County: All solid waste collection services for residents of unincorporated Sarasota County scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 28, and Thursday, Sept. 29, are canceled. Garbage and recycling should now be secured until the storm passes. Residents with regularly scheduled collection on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday should not put garbage, recycling or yard waste at the curb until further notice. Conditions will be assessed after the storm passes to determine when collection services will resume. 


The Central County Landfill will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 28, and Thursday, Sept. 29. Conditions will be assessed after the storm passes to determine when the landfill will reopen. 


Once the landfill reopens, priority disposal access will be given to medical facilities, evacuation centers and haulers for Sarasota County and the cities of Sarasota, Venice and North Port. Residents may be directed to alternative disposal sites throughout the county based on the impact of the storm. 


The Citizens' Convenience Center at the landfill will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 28 and Thursday, Sept. 29. The Bee Ridge Chemical Collection Center will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 28 through Sunday, Oct. 2. The Jackson Road Chemical Collection Center will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 28 through Tuesday, Oct. 4. Conditions will be assessed after the storm passes to determine when the collections centers will reopen. 


City of Sarasota:  Wednesday and Thursday's trash, recycling and yard waste pickups for City of Sarasota customers have been suspended. Residential collections scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 29 will be picked up on Friday and regularly scheduled Friday collections will be deferred to Saturday. 

 

City of North Port: There will be no solid waste collection on Wednesday, Sept. 28 or Thursday, Sept. 29. All collection for the remainder of the week will be pushed back two days. Wednesday's collection will now be Friday, Thursday will be Saturday, and Friday will be Sunday. 


City of Venice: The City of Venice Solid Waste division will collect residents’ garbage, recycling and yard waste as usual on Tuesday. There will be no collection of residential garbage, recycling and yard waste in the city on Wednesday, Sept. 28 and Thursday, Sept. 29. Venice Solid Waste will collect commercial dumpsters for both Tuesday and Wednesday. Solid Waste will not collect dumpsters again until Friday, Sept. 30, but will collect two days’ worth including Thursday’s.

Sarasota County Schools Update

Sarasota County Schools will be closed until further notice.


Updates will be sent out and posted at www.sarasotacountyschools.net/hurricane with all school-related information as it becomes available for the remainder of the week.

Transportation

County buses will not be in service Wednesday, Sept. 28. Announcements regarding service on Thursday, Sept. 29 will be announced later.


SCATPlus

Regular SCATPlus service will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 28. The service provider, MTM Transit, will contact individuals to reschedule critical medical dialysis trips from Wednesday to Tuesday. Announcements regarding service on Thursday, Sept. 29, will be announced later.


OnDemand

OnDemand service will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 28. Announcements regarding service on Thursday, Sept. 29, will be announced later.


Siesta Key Breeze Trolley

Trolley service will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 28; announcements regarding service on Thursday, Sept. 29, will be announced later.
