SoCo Emergency: Flood Warning in Effect

A graph titled "Russian River at Guerneville" displays observed and forecasted water levels. The latest observed value is 30.00 feet at 11:00 AM PST on November 22, 2024. The flood stage is marked at 32 feet. The graph predicts a peak level of 34.20 feet, followed by a gradual decline. The x-axis represents dates and times, and the y-axis shows stage levels in feet. The flood risk zones are color-coded: yellow (action stage at 29 feet), orange (minor flooding at 32 feet), and red (major flooding at 40 feet).

A Flood Warning has been issued for the Russian River near Guerneville, impacting the communities of Guerneville, Forestville and Monte Rio starting at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22 and continuing until further notice. The river is expected to peak at 33.7 feet on Friday night. At 33 feet, flooding will close the intersection of Highway 116 and Drake Road in Guerneville, inundate Willow and Alder Streets in Monte Rio and begin affecting the Mirabel trailer park in Forestville.

A Flood Watch is in effect through Saturday, November 23, until 10 a.m. Urban areas and small streams flooding caused by excessive rainfall in central Sonoma County is expected.

Stay away from the edge of rivers and creeks. River and creeks will have rapidly rising levels, with fast moving water and debris.

As we navigate through this flood season, it's important to be prepared and informed. Please be sure to sign up for emergency alerts, have an evacuation plan in place if you're in a low-lying or flood-prone area, check in on your neighbors, and email district5@sonoma-county.org or call 2-1-1 for information about local resources.

Sandbags

Utilizing sandbags is a straightforward yet efficient method to mitigate flood water damage and erosion. When properly filled and positioned, sandbags serve as a barrier to redirect flowing water. The following self-serve sandbag filling stations are available in West County:

  • Sonoma County Fire District Station #7: 6554 Mirabel Road, Forestville
  • Monte Rio Fire Station: 9870 Main Street, Monte Rio
  • Occidental Fire Department: 3800 Bohemian Highway, Occidental

Shelter Availability

There is currently shelter availability at the West County Community Services (WCCS) shelter at the Vets Building in Guerneville. To access, an individual needs to go into the WCCS office at 16390 Main Street (former Bank of America building). The front door to WCCS is locked at 2 PM but knock, someone is there until 5 PM. Do not go directly to the shelter.
