The library is closed April 6-11

Library staff experienced quite a surprise when we arrived for work Monday morning (April 6). We found flooding in various areas of the library. With help from City of Giddings personnel, we quickly formulated a plan. A cleaning and restoration company was on site within two hours to begin the remediation process. Library staff began cleaning areas and relocating books and furniture.

Here's what we know: A pipe in one of the public restrooms broke and began spraying water into the restroom. Water was not contained to the restroom and began flowing under the walls. Since the library was closed April 3-5 for the Easter holiday, water was pouring from the pipe for days without anyone knowing. By the time the broken pipe was discovered, multiple areas of the library had pools with several inches of standing water. According to our water meter, 500 gallons of water were dumped inside the building.

The restoration company is currently removing the water. Then commercial fans and humidifiers will be placed around all affected locations. After the building is completely dry, there is a strong possibility that some drywall, insulation, tile, and carpet will need to be replaced. We were advised to close the library to the public this week for safety reasons. Our April 6-11 closure affects all of our programs, services, and events.

  • The library is closed to the public, and work crews will be on site the entire week
  • Wednesday, April 8, Storytime canceled
  • Friday, April 10, Grow with Google will be relocated; new location TBD
  • No books are due during our closure, and books will not become overdue
  • No office services are available
  • Books may not be reserved or checked out during the closure

We'll send another email update Friday, April 10. Follow us on Facebook for more frequent updates. Thank you so much for your understanding and patience during our closure.

This small lake immersed two computers in water and damaged two desks, an antique card catalog, and an oak cabinet.

We quickly turned off power to the building once realizing that electronics were completely immersed.

This entire storage closet in the meeting room had inches of standing water. The hallway and another storage room were also affected.

Staff relocated about 3,000 books from the fiction section because water pooled underneath the large shelves. Books are stored on tables in the meeting room.

The restoration company is using commercial machines to remove water.

Fans and dehumidifiers will be used to remove moisture from the affected areas.
