Allergy & Asthma Special Edition

View as Webpage

Greetings,

DID YOU KNOW that two new studies point to inflammatory mediators called leukotrienes as key steps in anaphylactic food allergen reactions and asthma onset, making the molecules worth more scrutiny?

While researchers will focus on blocking leukotrienes response, here are leukotrine mediators, which reduce the reactions without blocking them:

  • Boswellia serrata
  • Quercetin
  • Luteolin
  • Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA)
  • N-acetylcysteine (NAC)
  • Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols)
  • Magnesium

On another note, if you suspect you have IgE food allergies (different from IgG food intolerances) and want to test for them, it's always better to test when allergy season is not virulent. Spring pollen season has already started in some parts of the country and will locally at the end of March.

Infection Support UPDATED!

Year-round infection is the new normal. We are exposed to many endemic viruses including SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), norovirus (stomach flu), adenovirus (common cold), monkeypox, and four other coronaviruses (common cold), among others. Support your immune system with our Free Prevent and Fight Infection 3.0 Protocol here.

Warning: Counterfeit, Adulterated Supplements Online

On the internet, especially at Amazon, there is an epidemic of counterfeit, adulterated, and purposely mislabeled dietary supplements. A recent analysis of methyl B12 supplements sold on Amazon found only 56% met label claim. A man was arrested for selling counterfeit Pure Encapsulations products. A study from JAMA Network Open found that half of immune products analyzed from Amazon had labels that did not match the contents. Emerging Allergens, New Reactions, and More

Steve: I wanted you to be aware of emerging allergens and other studies that fall outside of the usual allergy milieu.

Allergies Linked to Headphones

Octylisothiazolinone is a biocide used in leather, synthetic leather, and headphone foams. Although prohibited in cosmetics, it is known to cause severe reactions, such as edema and eczema. In several reported cases, it caused inflammatory eczema around the ears.

Dimethyl fumarate, an antifungal agent previously used in sofas, is also in headphones. For earphones such as AirPods, cases of allergic eczema have been reported, often linked to silicone tips or plastic components.

Allergies Linked to Watches and Mobile Phones

In smartwatches, nickel remains a well-recognized contact allergen and is found in clasps or beneath the silicone components of the devices. Protective screens containing acrylates such as isobornyl acrylate and 4-acryloylmorpholine have also been associated with eczema.

Allergies Linked to Orthopedic Implants

Metal hypersensitivity occurs in orthopedic implants, particularly knee prostheses. These patients encounter unexplained postimplantation pain. When no other cause is identified, delayed metal hypersensitivity is suspected in approximately 5% of cases. Nearly half of the patients were sensitized to at least one metal, including 31% who were sensitized to nickel. Sensitization to cobalt was also more frequent in 10% of patients than in the general population. Allergic reactions to cement components, including acrylates and methyl methacrylate, are rare and far less frequent than those reported in previous studies. Sensitization to titanium and manganese was observed in 4% and 2% of patients, respectively.

Allergies Linked to Nail Products

Artificial nails and permanent nail polish can cause severe eczema triggered by acrylates, particularly 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylates (HEMA). A new HEMA-free label has been introduced, but it does not address the problem because individuals sensitized to other acrylates can still experience severe reactions.

Antibiotics

Antibiotic treatment in the first week of life was associated with increased food allergies at ages 9-12, a European Journal of Pediatrics study found.

Allergies and Celiac Disease
The prevalence of IgE-mediated allergies in patients with celiac disease is significantly higher than that in the healthy population, according to a study from Frontiers in Nutrition.

Case Report

From Grave to Great

A middle-age woman came to Steve for rapid weight loss, sudden change in bowel habits that caused bouts of extreme constipation and uncontrolled diarrhea, as well as chronic stomach pain. She was also experiencing extreme family-related stress. These issues were also affecting her bones adversely as she got a very unusual foot fracture. She was not getting answers from her army of specialists who simply wanted her to go on multiple GI medications. She wanted to see if she could actually fix the issues.

Steve explained that what she was eating was diametrically opposed to what her body needed, causing malabsorption and malnutrition. Moreover, her doctor prescribed a huge amount of iron which she was not absorbing and contributing to her constipation. Steve also made the connection between her stress and the inability for her GI tract to function properly.

Steve recommended an optimal eating plan for her to follow while also allowing her gastrointestinal tract to rest and repair through targeted supplementation and other lifestyle measures. They discussed sensible types of physical activity and stress management techniques that she felt comfortable with.

In a few short months, her gastrointestinal function normalized. She even took the plan a step further by eschewing caffeine! Currently, she feels great without any life limitations.

Chiro Corner NEW!

Natural Birth After Caesarean

A new study has been published in the Journal of Pediatric Maternal & Family Health Chiropractic that presents compelling clinical insight into the chiropractic care of pregnant women who are pursuing having a Vaginal Birth after they have had a Cesarean section.

The women in this study sought chiropractic intervention during pregnancy to support the best position of their baby along with pain management, and natural birth outcomes. All patients received chiropractic care with Webster Technique analysis and adjustment during pregnancy. Each woman experienced improvement in complaints such as low back pain, pelvic discomfort, sciatica, and ligament tension. They also successfully achieved a vaginal birth following a prior cesarean delivery and no adverse events were reported.

Typically a woman is scheduled for a cesarean when she has a breech baby. Chiropractic does not treat breech presentation directly but rather focuses on optimizing spinal and pelvic alignment to allow the mother’s body, and the baby, to function more effectively. Cesarean delivery rates remain elevated across the United States and this study offers a hopeful perspective for providers supporting patients interested in having a Vaginal Birth after they have had a Cesarean.
