Emerging Trend: Oral Nicotine Pouches & Lozenges

Another flavored nicotine product is growing in popularity among young people -- oral nicotine pouches and lozenges. A 2020 study from Truth Initiative found that 13% of 15-24 year olds were past 30-day users of nicotine pouches. Zyn and Velo are the popular brands and both come in a variety of youth-friendly flavors such as mango, cinnamon, honey lemon, citrus burst, black cherry, and many types of mint and methanol flavors.

One of the appeals of a nicotine pouch is that it does not produce saliva, so it does not require spitting, making it more appealing to women. Although there is no leaf tobacco, it still contains 6 milligrams of nicotine per pouch, which disrupts teen brain development and can lead to addiction.

Currently there aren't as many regulations when it comes to marketing for these products as there are for smokeless or combustible tobacco products. Zyn is taking advantage of that; their marketing seems to be very appealing to youth with bright colors and even suggestions for flavor pairings, like a coffee nicotine pouch with donuts (see right).
