WHAT IS CANVAS?

CANVAS is a learning management system known for its user-friendly online environment. You will be using it to participate in your online classes. CANVAS will connect you with your instructor and classmates and provide an exceptional learning experience!

This guide provides the basics to get students started in CANVAS.

The more you use it, the easier it will become!

TO LEARN CANVAS, START HERE

FUNDAMENTALS DEPENDING ON THE DEVICE YOU USE

DESKTOP COMPUTER AND LAPTOP USERS Important! Be sure to use GOOGLE CHROME as your browser to access CANVAS. CLICK HERE. (It's free.) Skip down to the CANVAS LEARNING STEPS below.

MOBILE PHONE AND TABLET USERS You must download the CANVAS STUDENT APP in order to see the Zoom function in CANVAS. Download it from the

APP STORE on your device. (It's free.) To learn about this app CLICK HERE .

Open the CANVAS STUDENT APP by tapping on it.

Type in online.saddleback.edu then tap NEXT (upper right).

Now log in to the CANVAS login screen with your Saddleback Username and Password.

USERNAME INFO: Your Username is the first part of your Saddleback email address before the "@" symbol. If you don't know your college email address, log in to MySite and click the Profile Icon at top right of the screen. (See what a Profile Icon looks like, above right.) Your Username is the 1st letter of your first name, your last name and a number/numbers.

Your courses will appear on the Dashboard.

There will be a Zoom option in your navigation bar on the left after you open your class. (If you still don't see the Zoom links, log out of the CANVAS APP, then sign back in and follow the instructions again.)

THE CANVAS LEARNING STEPS

STEP 1 CANVAS OVERVIEW View the CANVAS OVERVIEW video. CLICK HERE

STEP 2 GO TO THE SADDLEBACK COLLEGE WEBSITE at wwws.saddleback.edu.

and in the red bar across the top, click on the word LOGINS, then in the

drop-down menu, click CANVAS at top right for the CANVAS login. (Note: This login box is used by Saddleback and Irvine Valley Students. You'll see both college logos at the top.)

STEP 3 RESET YOUR PASSWORD If this is the FIRST TIME you are using CANVAS, you will need to "re-set your Password" by creating one.

In the CANVAS login box, click "Forgot Password."
In the "Account Management" box, click "I have forgotten my Password."
Enter your College Email Address. (See how to find yours, above.)
Click "Proceed."
Click "Mobile."
Enter the last 4 digits of your cell phone number.
Click "Send Code" which will send a text to your phone.
Enter the code number where it indicates on the screen.
Click "Verify."
Create a new password and type it in TWICE. Minimum requirements are 12 characters, including 1 Uppercase Letter, 1 Number, 1 Special Character (!@#$%&*).
Click "Change Password."
Save your Password! Store it in your computer or cell phone.

STEP 4 LOG IN TO CANVAS with your Username and the Password you just created. You will see your Dashboard. (See Username information, above.)

Always use GOOGLE CHROME as your browser as it's the most compatible.
Read any emails sent to you by your instructors via Saddleback email.

ACCESS: Students will be able to access their course(s) anytime during the day or night from any computer with an internet connection.

IMPORTANT - Please Read

Students enrolled in online classes are responsible for learning CANVAS on their own by carefully reading these instructions above and watching the short video tutorials.

Students CANNOT be "walked through" CANVAS on the phone, email or LIVE CHAT.

Be patient and take the time to learn CANVAS. As you continue using this learning software, it will become second nature to you!
