Dear Emerson Parents,

Our school has reached the 4th quarter of the 2022-23 school year! We are proud of the ways our students continue to strive and grow. This quarter will provide culminating projects, varied assessments, and some of the most challenging work of the year. We look forward to working with students through June to make the very most of our school year.

Please note below some of the updates and achievements within our school:

NJSLA Testing:  We have used the full week for state testing. Students have done a great job of arriving on time and doing their best! Thank you to the School Counseling department for their hard work in coordinating the test administration. Next week, Junior High students will complete testing and we will hold makeup administration.

AP Testing:  Students have worked hard throughout the year to move through college-level material. We are pleased that seniors have now taken three school-issued practice exams as they approach the official AP administration.

Class of 2022: We are excited to soon celebrate our seniors. This class is a unified, positive group that set a fine example of making the most of the Emerson experience. They have challenged themselves in the classroom and shared their talent on the stage and competition field. Thank you to our counseling department for working with students to find meaningful post-secondary programs and high-caliber institutions that meet the needs and aspirations of our seniors. Each of them has exciting paths beyond our school.

DECA: We especially recognize our DECA program led by Ms. Jennifer Bieber. We congratulate Melanie Delarosa and Olivia Piserchia on attending the DECA National Convention in Atlanta, GA. Both students represented our school very well in national competition. Please see below for more detail.

Parent Programming: We are grateful to receive valuable input from our parents at our most recent Habits of Work presentation. An overview of the presentation is available here. In the course of the program, a meaningful conversation was had on developing habits of responsibility, citizenship, engagement, and perseverance.

Points of Emphasis
The below issues present opportunities for partnership between school and home on good-sense measures towards the healthy development of our young adults. More detail on related school-based expectations is available in our School Handbook.

Punctuality: Students should arrive at school on time each day. This demonstrates the intention to learn and offers the opportunity for each student to be prepared to access the full instructional period. Students should arrive at the building between 7:30 and 7:50 a.m. in order to be properly prepared for the day. Students who arrive late to class are subject to a disciplinary response in accordance with the School Handbook.

Regulated Screen Time/Restful Sleep: the need for adolescents to receive adequate sleep is well-established. Parents are encouraged to have a conversation with their children about their screen time. This article provides a template for an effective conversation. We recognize regulated screen time as supportive of student focus and productivity during the school day. More, it permits students to have restful sleep at night for the activity of the next day.

Cell Phones: please note that cell phones are not permitted for use in the classroom during the instructional day. More detail on cell phone policy and expectations is available on page 28 of the School Handbook.

School Dress: It is important that students dress in a manner that reflects their intention to learn and grow each day in our school. Our school maintains an expectation for school dress as listed on page 32 of the School Handbook. In the application of this policy, our school will demonstrate professional care and respect for all students and their ability to express themselves.

We thank our school community for their continued partnership and support of school programming. Our school welcomes the opportunity to work with parents in developing outstanding young adults.

Sincerely,

Brian Hutchinson
High School Principal
