On Monday, the Beth Emet Board of Trustees affirmed our belief in the importance of advancing racial equity by signing the Stronger Together Evanston petition.
A teacher in Evanston School District 65 has brought a lawsuit against the district which alleges that specific antiracist practices and curriculum of the district are illegal. In response to the lawsuit, a group of concerned Evanston residents wrote a petition in support of the district’s commitment to equity. Beth Emet was asked to sign it. More than a thousand people have signed the petition, including Rabbis London and Memis-Foler, and dozens of religious congregations have done so as well.
On Monday we held an information session about the petition. Afterwards the Board of Trustees met and voted to approve Beth Emet signing the petition. In addition to the petition, the Beth Emet Board of Trustees issued this statement.
We feel it’s important to stand in solidarity with our multiracial congregation and community against a concerted attempt to undermine the teaching of anti-racism in our schools, a curriculum that benefits all children regardless of race. This is also more than a local issue. The foundation that filed the lawsuit on behalf of the District 65 teacher views this as a test case, and the lawsuit has been widely publicized.
Since our founding, Beth Emet has been engaged in fighting for civil rights and has been a leader in the Evanston community speaking out against hatred, discrimination, and bigotry of any kind. Working to create a more just and compassionate society is core to who we are as a congregation.

Online Member Login is Making a Move
Current Member Portal for Donations Only
Want to be a beta tester?
The big news is that we are transitioning our database to a new platform (Salesforce!), but our new online member portal, MyBethEmet, is not quite ready for primetime. (But it is sooo close!) During this transitional period, please note that our old “member only” section has not been updated. For the immediate future, if you wish to check your account, look up a member, or find a yahrzeit, please contact the office who can assist. If you’re interested in testing and giving us feedback, contact Bekki Kaplan.

B'nai Mitzvah
Zev Lifshen
August 21, 2021
Parents: Mila Cohen and Eli Lifshen
Hi, my name is Zev. I go to Stone Scholastic Academy in Chicago. My favorite subject is science. I study violin with Stacia Spencer at Northwestern University String Academy and play in the Virtuosi Strings and the CYSO. When I’m not in school I like to play video games. For my b’nai mitzvah project I helped pack nearly 3,000 boxes of food for the Chicago Food Depository. I chose that because food insecurity is a problem that’s even worse because of the current pandemic. I'm looking forward to my bar mitzvah because I get to celebrate with family and friends.

Soup Kitchen Volunteers Needed
The Soup Kitchen continues to provide take-away meals every Wednesday evening, and we rely on a small onsite team with many volunteers making part of the meal at home. We're now making summer assignments to those interested in helping out by making either sack lunches, a large salad, or homemade nut-free desserts at home and delivering them to Beth Emet on the scheduled date. Cost of groceries is about $35 for 20 lunches and $20 for a large salad. Please let us know your interest in helping out (email soupkitchen@bethemet.org), and we'll find you an open date and provide the shopping list and/or instructions.

High Holy Day Food Drive with The Ark of Chicago
Beth Emet will continue the High Holy Day food drive tradition in partnership with The Ark of Chicago. The synagogue will be accepting donations on Yom Kippur day, September 16, from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, and the first day of Beit Sefer, September 19, from 9:30 am and 1:30 pm The Beth Emet parking lot will again be the drop-off site.
On the day of Yom Kippur, you may drop off your donations prior to entering the sanctuary. On the first day of Beit Sefer, you may either hand off your donations after parking or remain in your car and drive up to the pod using the typical Beit Sefer counterclockwise pattern. In that event, donated items will be retrieved by volunteers directly from trunks and hatches. Our volunteers will be wearing masks. We ask that donors use recyclable bags.
The Ark will not be providing bags or stickers (listing preferred items). Instead, a list is provided here with the caveat that all food donations must be certified kosher and must have expiration dates of at least six months after the drop-off date. The Ark will also not accept vegetables with a "Triangle K" Kosher symbol. The most common brands using this symbol are Del Monte and Kirkland.
